Matt is basically an MLS player. He has not done anything of note in England. The good news is we have a promising upcoming generation of young keepers. Kochen, Slonina, Beavers, Brady, Pulskamp, Schulte, Freese, and Celentano should get the bulk of the call ups going forward.

Actually Herc, when Turner played in the Europa League for Arsenal he was good; he made some great saves against Sporting and during the group phase. The problem was he was going to be 3rd string so they sold him. Turner's problem is he's absolutely awful with his feet, I'm talking straight liability haha. Steffen's problem is that he's guaranteed to make 2 horrible mistakes every game and he's not a great shot stopper. Horvath this weekend was bad, I'd play Slonina if he does well at Barnsley.

Z. Steffen starting next USMNT match would be good but lets not fool ourselves... we sell this generation of USMNT players as if they were all prodigies & class talent. They need to show it on the field and so far (Copa America and the Olympics), the US core has not been able to show it. Just not hungry enough yet but we have time and have done things to grow the sport more compared to deconstructing it.

Matt Turner recahed his cieling. For a guy who started playing as a teenager he's done great for himself but thats that. Top teams want a goalkeeper who is good with their feet. Turner is not that player.
@jfnwjnowngowjrn2 ай бұрын
I wonder if the last decade of US Soccer's emphasis on improving technical play from the youth level up has resulted in a shortage of goalkeepers now? Almost no kid wants to play keeper, and if the coaching structure doesn't emphasize GK development, the end result is simply that you won't produce quality keepers.
@benoitwaffle54392 ай бұрын
That or no country is entitled to an elite goalie with every passing generation. It is somewhat of a fluke the US had as impressive a string from Keller to Friedel to Howard. The other factor more specific to this generation is that Steffen, Turner, and Slonina went to clubs that had no interest in them playing right away. In every instance, they went to places where they were just an asset. If they played, fine. If not, loan them out with the hope of selling them at a profit. The players get their money off the deal, but there is professional risk to not playing regularly. Nobody stays sharp by not playing.

The goalkeeping situation is the worst I've seen it in years. There truly is no real #1 bat this point. Johnson is 35, Horvath is terrible and Turner cant get on the pitch. It will be interesting to see what Poch does.

Think a few of these guys, and not just GKs need to drop a league or two and just get playing, get confidence and build back their brand. For Matt, he's 29-30, with a family, he didn't have time to wait and hang. He needed to take his shot like Steffen did. Come home to MLS, get paid, get play, and let's just accept that we don't have the GK stable we once did.

Been saying this for years. Their keepers are trash. Howard was up and down throughout his career, but in form he was no doubt a top keeper in the prem. Now the US has skill players up front, but the backline and goalie options are awful. I'm certain they'll struggle to get out of group stage and it'll be a huge success if they somehow win a knockout game before getting stomped by a real team.

Tony Meola was NOT a great goalkeeper. He was blown up by the US media, but in the knockout match against Brazil, he gave up a near post goal to Bebeto, resulting in the 1-0 loss. No decent goalkeeper should ever give up a near post goal - all you have to do is position yourself to shut that space off COMPLETELY. So yeah, poor positioning in leaking that goal. Zack Steffan - sheeeeeesh! He did NOT play at City and win trophies. He LOST trophies, with his boneheaded howlers in the FA Cup. He was also terrible during the first half of Berhalter's reign, coughing up cheap stoppable goals. THAT is why he lost his starting spot. Turner started off good, then just completely collapsed once he moved to England. Dunno if he can ever recover. Schulte and Slonina are both terrible - very slow and unathletic guys. Way overhyped as usual by the US media.
