I think once the USS Cole is retired they should make her a museum ship. She should be preserved and honored. Out of respect for the sailors who lost they're lives during that fateful day when she was hit. And also to the sailors who fought to keep her afloat
@EricDKaufman4 жыл бұрын
I watch this video and I think the same thing. There is just soooooo much here. The ship probably still has another 25 years in her, so any type of commission or non-profit to petition the USN for her purchase and preservation as a museum ship is premature, but I hope people remember that far in the future and she isn't recycled into razor blades.

I was in the US NAVY for 7yrs onboard the USS John L Hall FFG-32 as an Administration Officer 0-3 Liutanat. I was on a Mediterranean Cruise when my ship got the dreaded red phone call from both the US NAVY Secretary and then the VP of the US about the USS Cole. My ship rendezvoused in Cairo Egypt on a floating dry dock that had the USS Cole on it. And my orders from the US NAVY Secretary and VP of the US were to personally be the lead ship and escort the USS Cole to Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula MS where the ship was dry docked and repaired to readness status

I was an instructor in Dam Neck, VA when the Cole was hit. I had a previous student newly aboard and a colleague who rotated to sea on his way to the Cole when it happened. Everyone was stunned. I am in no way taking away from, or diminishing 9/11, but I didn't know someone there, but I did know someone on the Cole. It was different knowing someone there, the potential they had possibly being taken away before they had a much of a chance to reach that potential. Thankfully, the Cole and her crew have had an impact on damage control readiness across the fleet, just like the Stark, and many others.

I worked in material sourcing at Northrop Grumman/Ingalls when the Cole was bought to the shipyard for repairs. I did the drawings that tracked what was being removed and where to new equipment was before reinstallation. When I also did Pipe and ventilation drawings during her construction in the 90's. The Cole is I my thoughts every time I send an e-mail, I look at my phone, laptop ect. On each device I have a picture of the Cole and with every e-mail where I have my name the saying "Always remember the U.S.S Cole", the ship hit a special place in my heart that I will always remember until the day I leave this world. I have memorabilia from the ship, braded cap, mugs, coins, a full (Red) wind suit and hundreds of pictures of the damage right after she was attacked which I used to make a power point about the history behind the name. As all ways "All ways remember the U.S.S Cole ".

Nice tour. Your CCS is really different from the CCS onboard my ship, USS Kidd (DDG-993). The consoles were much larger, with analog gauges, mechanical push buttons, and levered throttles. The Electric Plant Control Console (EPCC) was similar in nature, though smaller. And the Damage Control Console (DCC) featured a silhouette of the ship with indicators for alarm sensors in different parts of the ship, as well as push button control of all six fire pumps. Good grief! You call that a helm? 😁 In my day, the wheel was larger, and the integrated throttles and propeller pitch control used a pair of levers. (Side note - I was one of two qualified as “Lee Helm” during the 1987 Persian Gulf tanker escort operation) Again, nice tour! Keep up the great work, and never forget the “why”. GSE1 Newhall (Ret.) Having served aboard many Navy ships many years ago, one thing about this video that struck me as odd was the number of security locks on the doors. Generally only spaces that contained classified material would have security locks and a safe for the material. I worked in one on the USS Kitty Hawk. Why spaces like the Oil Lab and General Workshop would need one is beyond me. The only thing locked spaces like this is doing is delaying access during an emergency.

The Chief's Mess...when I was on the USS Guam, they called that the "Goat Locker"...as tradition on sailing ships was that sheep and goats were kept in the Chief's mess...as they were the only one's trusted to not slaughter and eat the ships goats...or so I was told. The Navy should build the next fleet of ships to incorporate polyethylene foam inserts(the stuff that keeps life preservers, and pool noodles afloat). Polyethylene foam maintains buoyancy, if you weld a 1 inch thick steel 10' cubed box with an open hatch and drop it in the ocean, that cube block would sink to the bottom once it's filled with water in minutes. Take that same cube with the open hatch and surround it with 4 " thick of polyethylene foam wrap, and drop it in the ocean, that 10 foot cubed 1" thick steel cube will stay afloat with the hatch open allowing water to fill. Think about it, a 7 ounce pool noodle can keep a 250 pound man afloat. the benefits of polyethylene foam is that they're multi cellular air bubbles comprised, and enclosed within the polyethylene membrane that is perfect for buoyancy. Go Navy.
