On Oct. 12, 2000, a small picket boat filled with hidden explosives approached the side of the USS Cole while it was refueling in Yemen’s Aden harbor and exploded. The blast by suicide bombers caused a gaping 40-foot hole in the destroyer’s hull in the area of the mess hall, where sailors were standing in the chow line.
“I finished what I was doing on the computer and as I stood up I got knocked down as the steel deck literally rippled beneath my feet,” reflected Christina Huber, the command career counselor of the Cole. “It felt like we got rammed in the back of the ship.”
The explosion killed 17 US Navy sailors and injured hundreds more. Rescue and recovery efforts began immediately, as well as an investigation into who was responsible for the terrorist attack.

If we actually did something after the Cole was attacked we could have prevented 9/11 from ever occurring.

Right, our response was weak, Clinton and Albright likely knew who was potentially responsible and dd nothing, emboldening the terrorists and we get 9/11 And for the clueless, these events never happen in a void, they probe defenses looking for weal points, also remember the towers had been attacked before, all leading up to the big attack

I actually saw Cole in Norfolk a few years after the attack. My dad and I were on a tour of the harbor. It was kind of surreal. They had done a really good job repairing her, and I couldn’t tell that she had been bombed just a few years earlier. God bless our sailors!

I was on the Abraham Lincoln when the Cole was attacked. We were in the Gulf and had just pulled out of port in Jebel Ali on the 8th of October. That was a pretty intense time. We all thought war was imminent and tensions were high on our ship. Rest in peace to the 17 sailors who lost their lives.

I worked at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula Mississippi as a Sheetmetal mechanic and intake specialist. I helped build that ship. A lot of work I did was destroyed and I took it personal. I was standing on the fantail of another DDG seen on the left hand side as they're bringing it in the shipyard. I didn't get to work on the repair as I was already in the middle of my job on the other ship. Over my career at Ingalls, I helped build DDG'S, CG'S, and LHD'S. I am proud to have been a part of giving the US Navy the means of protecting our freedom. Our motto at Ingalls was, We are building freedom one day at a time. RIP to the Sailors that made the ultimate sacrifice. Their deaths were not in vain. This incident has forever changed Navy policy and training for new recruits. Godspeed USN!

Thanks for the look back. Would like to recommend possibly doing one on the USS Stark FFG 31 and the crews efforts to save her after she was struck by Iraqi missiles.

My DCA was on the Stark. He had to stay in a tiny boiling hot space for over 24 hours without relief while he sprayed a bulkhead with a firehose almost continuously to keep the fire from spreading. I think every damaged boat has many sailors with that kind of harrowing tale.

I’m absolutely amazed everyday that man has built such massive machines and vehicles such as a ship that can haul, in this case the USS Cole. A ship large enough and unique enough to load another vessel and transport it all the way home for repair.. just amazing!

I'm a Brit, ex army, living in a South Yorkshire town (now city). The street that I was living in at the time they arrested a lad who did the reconnaissance for the attack. Nothing happened to him. Same lad, everytime I came back from ops would try his best to ask me about it ! To the extent I reported him. Still nothing happened! Brilliant. He said sarcastically.
