Godspeed, Navy. I worked alongside active duty and reserve "low sodium sailors" (Navy Respiratory Therapists) in the late 90's at Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), which staffs the USNS Mercy on her cruises/missions. These good doctors, nurses, RT's and other dedicated professionals are second to NONE!! Long ago, they cared for me, when I was on active duty in the Marine Corps, and I'd gladly put my life into a Navy Corpsman's very capable hands. My hat is off to today's crew and staff of USNS Mercy and USNS Comfort (east coast, home ported in Norfolk, VA). Today's Navy leads the way!!!!

Los Angeles, I believe. It will take civilian patients from the community who need hospitalization and are NOT infected with coronavirus. They will simply be freeing up non-coronavirus patients from needed beds in the civilian community. This should help a lot. These 2 hospital ships each have 1000 beds, several OR suites and an extremely large Intensive Care Unit. They also had, at the time I worked at the NMCSD, a fleet of about 100 ventilators. They have LOTS of needed equipment for patient care, not to mention MANY medical specialists and staff.

So what if the hospitals here get overwhelmed? Where will the non coronavirus patients be treated?

@President of the Virgin Islands You are exactly right. Not many people realize that deploying a ship like that, let alone a hospital ship of that size, requires a tremendous logistical effort. The medical staff of that ship, for the most part, works in the Naval Medical Center San Diego, and their departure means that staffing levels need to be arranged for both on board ship and in the hospital, where they normally work. When these ships deploy, they must take staff from the on shore medical centers and arrange for their replacements while they are deployed. Add to that the logistical feat of procuring supplies, equipment and needed stock for the mission and it's pretty mind boggling. In actuality, they have managed to deploy very quickly, all things considered. They do very, very well, believe me!!!!! I applaud them!!!! GO NAVY!!!!
