Vitas, was a great player, tragically died while staying at a friend's house from carbon monoxide poisoning. An improperly installed pool heater leaked the deadly gas into the guest house where he was staying. His family sued the heater company and serviceman for damages, they were acquitted because the jury heard the gas would've got in there anyway because carbon m is heavier than air, which is false, it is lighter. Funniest quote by vitas was " nobody beats vitas 17 times in a row" he said this after finally beating connors in 1980 after losing the last 16 matches.

Haarhuis' major successes in his active career were in doubles , with Jacco Eltingh, winning titles in US, RG, Australian & Wimbledon. He was the Dutch Fed Cup coach 2014-2021.

Beating John McEnroe in this same US Open while being completely unknown as a tennis player was a highlight too though. As was his ATP singles title and being #18 on the ATP singles ranking.

@@flixl23 yep the crowd was acting as fuel for jimmy connors the whole tournament and after that point it was pedal to the metal
