Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC - 1993 World Figure Skating Championships, Ice Dancing, Free Dance - This was the competition where 6 of the 9 judges on the panel were suspended by the ISU when it was found that those judges had scored the couples based on their reputation rather than from their actual skating. That said, first, it's a profile on Maya Usova and Aleksandr Zhulin of Russia, followed by their Gold Medal winning Free Skate.

Восхитительны.Майя и Александр эффекты и бесподобны,даже по проишествии стольких лет неподражаемы. Все таки советское фигурное катание, я имею в виду танцоров лучшие в мире даже на сегодняшнем уровне, все без исключения. It certainly is striking. Can't question their speed and fluidity. However, she spends 99% of it either lifted by him or on her two feet. Technically, as an ice dance routine, it was extremely simple. I don't know why dubova their coach decided to go that route with them, but that simplicity is what did them in at the Olympics next year.

@3Axel1996 It seems a terrible shame that when they finally won their world title, one I feel they deserved fair and square, it's in a competition where there is such rampant corruption and wrongdoing by the judges. I still feel they are one of the most under appreciated teams. They should have won the 1991 title far and away and won at least silver at the 1992 Olympics. So many of their programs are burned into my memory, like this one and their Four Seasons. They're amazing.

Why were 6 judges suspended? U&Z performed beautifully- great flow, edges, turns, lines and positions. It's not like they were falling all over the place. They were the best ice dancers in the world after the retirement of Klimova-Ponomarenko. Grishchuk-Platov were still developing. Is this just another example of North Americans hating success of any Russian team?

@NashfanVash No, it was discovered that 6 of the 9 judges did not really pay attention to the Compulsory Dances, instead having pre-judged the couples by reputation and their previous placements at Worlds. There was one report that indicated that one judge didn't even bother to watch an entire Compulsory Dance performed by one of the competing couples.

Oh yes, there was A LOT of judging by reputation in figure skating back then in all disciplines but especially in ice dance. Now that I think of it, ice dance has always been the most political of every discipline

I agree completely. I think they're so well matched and you can't really talk about weakness with this team. But Sasha has a little more passion and reckless abandon when they perform. He also has that classic masculinity that's so magnetic on its own but he also knows how to best present the lady and let her take center stage. The other skaters you mentioned also do this so beautifully.

The lack of content with this team was a major weakness for them. The judges often overlooked it though until 1994, ironically the one good year where their programs actually had good content even though they clearly could not handle it.

As much U&Z will be remembered for their sublime Four Seasons FD, they were also excellent at interpreting the blues (see their amazing 1991 OD). This routine has a great sensuality and intensity to it. Usova is gorgeous, but Zhulin, IMO, is also one of those rare male skaters-along with Dmitriev, Dean and Zimmerman, who attracts the attention of the audience, as much, if not more than their partners.

Although I think Zhulin really shined here, I think Grishuk/Platov should have won the FD. There was too much posing (both with their picturesque moments and where they actually posed on two feet for a good bit of time). I preferred G/P's program conceptually and the actual content.

Yes, I agree with you. Grishuk & Platov had better speed, the elements were more difficult, the choreography was more beautiful. Grishuk & Platov skated like one piece, which is extrem difficult and important in ice-dancing. They skated real masterpiece.
