For those that might not know, the Navy Cross is the 2nd highest award the nation can award a sailor or marine, the highest being the Congressional Medal of Honor. Bravo Zulu Captain.

Good video presentation. A brave ship, shameful about the friendly fire.

Overall idea of a heavy AA escort / destroyer flotilla leader was sound for the time. Her weakness to surface vessel combat was known well enough but it was either bad luck or a series of unfortunate events, mixed with incompetence that did her in.

Two destroyers have been named for Rear Admiral Norman Scott: - DD-690, a Fletcher-class destroyer - DDG-995, a Kidd-class destroyer It is not known if an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer will be named for him.

Read Neptune's Inferno by James D. Hornfischer to get an accurate history of Atlanta's demise.

As Anti-Aircraft Cruisers the Atlanta Class was superb. As Destroyer Leaders they were flawed and under-armed.

They would have been suburb as Destroyer Flotilla leaders if they were ever used in the role by the USN, and 'Uner-armed', they had 10*5 inch guns, how many Destroyers have more?

I always thought the design to be great, as a flak ship in the future kamikaze years. On surface war , good against destroyers , but not on larger classes of warship. Salute to the fallen of Atlanta.

I forget which book tells of Atlanta in the Brooklyn Navy Yard using fire control radar to track the subway trains as they traveled across the Williamsburg Bridge.

The miss-use of the class was almost criminal, designed as both destroyer flotilla leaders and Anti-Aircraft cruisers in battle groups, they had no amour to speak of and to ask them to battle it out with better protected ships was just insane.

Atlanta was unfortunate to be assigned to the Callahan force. Fortunately, after that battle, Callahan was never able to get any more US sailors murdered through his incompetence!
