I don't think he has the gravitas of a starship captain. Sort of like how Spock never could fill Kirk's shoes during all those times he commanded the Enterprise. I don't think Saru is being written as a captain. Actually, there's no one on the cast (other than the ex-Emperor) who has the gravitas of a captain. So unless they're going to make Yeoh a regular (and she's a movie star, so I doubt she would want to be tied down to television), they're either going to have to introduce someone new or dramatically revise one of the existing characters. (Possibly Saru, but I honestly do not see it.)

I have been a ST fan since I watched the original series 40 years ago. Watched all the shows, read tons of the books, even done a number of conventions. I do not understand all the hate this show got as I think it is one of the most intelligent and thoughtful Trek series made. I appreciate the change of the tone and character to match the times while staying true to the theme of IDIC and respecting the intellectual fan as much as the action oriented ones. As a ST fan, I will always be thankful they are making anything Trek as it would be so easy to not for Paramount.

There's definitely a large percentage of Old Fans who were pretty set in their ways and wants and expectations, and wanted "more of the same" from what they got out of 90s Trek. The annoying part is that the level of progressive representation in Discovery is really kindof about the same as TOS had... back in the 1960s. Having a black woman, an Asian, and later a Russian on the BRIDGE crew was a big fuckin deal in the 1960s and was about as extreme / "woke" as they could get away with back then. Hell, Roddenberry wanted a female First Officer (Number One in The Cage) but wasn't allowed by the network execs. Today's Trek being loaded up with LGBT reps, minorities, and women, and minimizing the "normalization" of the white man is genuinely in keeping with Roddenberry's original desire for the series, though of course there are other aspects of Trek that have strayed from his vision - and this has been true since the day he died. Even some later TNG episodes and concepts wouldn't have been acceptable to Gene, but I honestly feel that Trek still embodies the bones of his vision and has overall been better off without some of his more awkward limitations.
@boomerbobable6 ай бұрын
@@ElysaraCh Well said. TV is a product of the times, even if it hurts the feelings of those who don't want to live in those times. Unless Trek gets a younger generation to start engaging with it in higher numbers, this franchise will not be around in 20 years or maybe even 10 I believe.
@ElysaraCh6 ай бұрын
@boomerbobable I think if Trek 'fades away' like it did with ENT after the current burst of shows and films, I'll still be satisfied we got a lot of great content between SNW, LD, and yes, even Discovery and Prodigy. And maybe when i am as old as the original TOS fans are today, we will see another resurgence that will feature pod people and all seventy-six (and a half) genders represented because that'll be the social progressivism of its era! :)
@safebox364 ай бұрын
I like some of what the show does, its main flaws for me are most of the characters, setting it before TOS instead of in the 31st century from the start, and handling current social issues worse than previous ST series did in the past. Strange New Worlds feels more like a respectable continuation of the franchise. Even Lower Decks (a comedic cartoon) and Prodigy (a kids show) build off what came before and respect the audience's intelligence more than Discovery's first season.

"Whiny reply" Are you kidding me? The only reason I responded (to a comment which has been cowardly deleted) was because literally every single Discovery video has nothing but "This isn't muh trek, why don't the console look like Ikea furniture painted red" comments under it. Piss off and leave people who actually live in 2018 to enjoy a new show. People like him and apparently you, are the definition of toxic fandom. You are ruining all corners of geek culture with your attitude. "Star Trek Fans" is a classic "no true scotsman" argument. It does not hold water. Alcubierre's design is like a Dyson sphere or any other number of speculative tech. You can't just draw a cool picture, claim credit but leave it to engineers to actually figure out how to harness the impossible amounts of energy involved. It's fantasy in the same way that any technology beyond our projected capabilities is. (I hear what your saying about replicators and 3d printing though. Can't wait to press print and pick my dinner up 12 hours later....) The point I'm trying to make is that Discovery is a Trek show. I've watched them all and all the movies and every single criticism of it seems to boil down to that the lead is a black woman and nothing to do with the speculative ideas. TOS has literal Gods in it. The whole of DS9 revolved around mystical beings who controlled a stable wormhole. I don't think expoitable space fungus is much of a stretch of the imagination.

I think that we have learned that it is a very BAD idea to beam while in a fight, because the energy weapons can still hurt you while you re defenceless and motionless for 1,2 maybe even 3 seconds. However, this is Discovery and it disregards so many things, one more detail does not really make a difference.

Honestly, I think that idea would work extremely well as a series based around the Temporal Cold War. After all, what is a temporal war, if not trying to change time in order to create the universe your side desires? There's so many fun things that could be done with it, frankly, which Enterprise didn't explore for the obvious reason that they were just focused on a single perspective of the war, that of one of the victims/linchpins.

So then, _did_ they really need to recapture the Defiant to get back. after all, or did Bad Lorca lie about that, too?
@Pavel_M_Mihalik5 жыл бұрын
The Noisy Spectator They needed to find out how the Defiant got there, so that they could replicate the process and return home. Later on they found out that Georgiou’s palace ship could damage the mycelial network, thus wiping out all life in all universes, so they got an idea to destroy the ship and use the explosion to charge Discovery’s spore drive and travel back to our universe.
@TheNoiseySpectator5 жыл бұрын
@@Pavel_M_Mihalik Thank you for answering. But, I still don't see _how_ they thought that would get them back _to their_ home Universe, once they were back in the mycelial network? Or, is that a plot hole that they just left hanging without explanation?
@TheNoiseySpectator5 жыл бұрын
@@Pavel_M_Mihalik - And, also, you said "Universes". I wonder why each universe doesn't have its own mycelial Network? Maybe it is this connection between the two universes that compells events in both universes to become more and more alike, despite the principles of Chaos theory and Entropy tending to make them more disparate.
@Pavel_M_Mihalik5 жыл бұрын
The Noisy Spectator You’re welcome :) Well, they knew that Lorca used the spore drive to jump to the Mirror universe and how he did it (all those jumps around the Sarcophagus ship before they destroyed it). They didn’t think of this option at first, because they thought it would kill Stamets (hence all the fuss about the Defiant), but once they found out about the mycelial reactor and its dangers they had no choice but to destroy it and risk using the spore drive. About each universe having its own network: I’m no scientist, so I have no idea how this could work. In the show they said it was like a thread weaving life throughout the Multiverse. I’m not sure the network is responsible for the similarities and differences between the 2 universes. In my opinion, they are different by nature. No universe is exactly the same as another one (or at least it’s very, very, VERY rare).

No. Prequels are hard because you have to conform to what happens after it. TOS has less tech and different uniforms (in TOS every ship had a different crest. Enterprise is the one we are used to). If you change it like Discovery, than it is now a reboot because you have a different vision. Like JJs universe. What they should have done was had a post DS9/VGR series, then you could do what you want because time moves on and tech develops.

First, I'm not paying for another streaming service. No way I'm buying CBS All Access when I can watch The Orville on Hulu and older Treks on Netflix. (I know Discovery is on Netflix outside the US and I can get a VPN, however, it is not worth it for this show) The special effects are terrible. Ik, Star Trek is not the best when it comes to special effects, however, at least they were well defined. Everything looked Star Trek. This looks like some cheap sci-fi shit. And why change the Klingons. Why? It was so unnecessary. The Klingons were always honorable. That's the damn point of them. Go one minute without a Klingon talking about honor. And the new look is terrible. And why? Modernize the look is fine, but completely changing is just stupid. They look nothing like the old Klingons. Hell, they look more like Jem" Hadar than Klingons. The storytelling is shit as well. Now, the show having a black female protagonist is fine. Star Trek has always been progressive and people saying that their "Left wing agenda" is ruining Star Trek don't know what they are talking about. Star Trek has always been progressive. That's not what makes the storytelling weak. The characters are poorly written, with plots not any better. It's just garbage. The writers and producers don't understand Star Trek. This show is all bang bang boom boom. This is not Star Trek. Star Trek did not focus on action. It was about exploration and tough culture questions. Many of the greatest episodes were about cultural issues. Yes, there was action. However, it had way better meaning to it. Old Star Trek establish Starfleet as peacekeeping explorers. They showed that they didn't want to fight, and you believed it. They would do whatever they could to avoid conflict. So when conflict did happen, you know that shit just got real. Take the Domain War for example. Starfleet tried so hard to avoid conflict. Trying to negotiate with the Dominion, trying to close the wormhole. The defended peace until they knew it was there will be no peace. The Domain War was coming, we all knew it. When Sisko said, "we're losing the peace, which means a war could be our only hope" You just knew that Starfleet as reached their last option. Discovery shows no real intention to have Starfleet be peaceful. It's just bang bang boom boom. Discovery wants wars. Old ST doesn't want war but will to survive.
