You can make an argument for the spore drive’s use as a mode of rapid-response FTL travel in already defined space or an emergency system. And even then, the show demonstrates that the drive requires the use of an organic navigator that is connected to the mycelium network the drive utilizes to work reliably, necessitating either the borderline enslavement and torture of a member of an indigenous species from the network or the genetic modification of Starfleet officers to navigate the network, both of which directly violate Starfleet law and significantly limits the utilization of said drive. Hence why there were only two ships to have the drive in use until the 32nd Century.

Honestly, the spore jump grew on me. Like a fungus. It's extremely weird. But they COMMITTED to it. That's what I want out of weird things - don't be half-hearted, don't be ashamed of your weird things, make it a statement. I like how they kept finding new things to do with it, like the jump from warp to stationary (1:10), the half-jump into a spore sea (2:35), or the way Booker's ship comes apart (5:30).

Generally I've enjoyed the first few seasons of the series, but I could never get over how goofy the spore jump looks. It's like they want to make something totally alien to the regular warp jump, and went for the silliest idea they could think of. The spore jump is stupid in concept, but the FX are so good it still manages to look kind of cool. Until you realize what you're seeing and then it's like people doing DBZ instant transmission, but in a serious live action non kung fu movie. Also, even though they can teleport anywhere and arrive standing still they still always teleport 5 feet from their enemies, JJ Trek style.
@alejandronopasanada53028 ай бұрын
And also, no one figured it out in 1k years.
@builder3968 ай бұрын
Honestly, I dont think the FX work is good, though it comes more from the creative decisions than the craftsmanship. The idea of the saucer surfaces spinning opposite ways and then ALSO having the ship do a fricking barrel roll to jump is just "Spinning is so much cooler than not spinning!" that clearly came from a person about as mature as a 12 year old. And then you can also clearly see the ship going up or down out of the shot, which is plain and simple not how teleportation or temporarily dipping into an alternate dimension works. The shroom space isnt above or below the camera angle, the ship would just pop out of existence for an outside observer, not move in any kind of direction. I honestly miss the times when the creative decisions behind FX shots were sound and the ability to execute said decisions lagged behind.

Some shots have the top half of the disks spinning in the opposite direction to the bottom half of the disks, and other shots show both top and bottom of the disks spinning in the same direction. Some shots show the top of the disks spinning one direction, then other shots show the top of the disks spinning the opposite direction. Same inconsistency when viewing the bottom of the disks. When the ship is viewed from the front, sometimes the ship spins clockwise and sometimes counter clockwise. Sometimes far future Discovery jumps mid spin and sometimes spins then stops then jumps. This was a profoundly stupid show. The original series was made for scientists and engineers and it was accessible to you as well. Now it's just stupid. This is so dumb. I'm in the top of my field, we laugh at this crap. So is this science fiction, or just stupid fantasy for children? I'd say the later.

If the spore drive was just inaccurate full time, so it could only be trusted for huge jumps, like it might get you like 5 hours away from your destination at warp 7, and the show had been about a crew running covert ops, scoping out the beta quadrant, there could have been a lot more potential with this idea, and the time period of the show.

Just realising that while the discovery is able to be a combat ship in a pinch, the rapid response capability made it the most versatile fighter they had. If they had even 1 combat orientated spore-drive ship in their arsenal, star fleet would have the upper hand in every battle/war ever. Like, imagine a US Navy Battleship (WW2 to match the age of the discovery compared to newer models) had the ability to appear anywhere at any time. The second a distress call by any medical/economy class vessel about pirates attacking, the USS Texas just appears. Sure you could use a manual escort all the way throughout the route of a trading vessel or you could literally be there to defend at the drop of a hat and return to base in the same moment

Excellent! This is the kind of content we need. How about Star Trek Lorca, only Mirror Lorcas story.

More fast than transwarp, more advanced than the sphere builders subspace technology wich looks like magic btw the myceliar tech is superior but discovery never understood the real implications of this. While the transwarp or standard warp is a common way of travel the subspace tech of the sphere builders was designed to be more defensive or situational with time as a factor between each jump. But this tech shines when its made for war. Ships instantly taking place into battle isnt a joke at all. Lorca at least understood it and created the lorca maneuver.... something that your enemy wouldnt expect.

If they didn't have a franchise to destroy, they wouldn't have any story. To me this is a Bobby Ewing in the shower moment when the past S.T. Burnham story was all but a dream.
