"...a powerful cyclone formed in the Philippine Sea and moved north toward Okinawa; it struck Third Fleet on 5 June south of the island. Indiana recorded winds as high as 80 knots (150 km/h; 92 mph), which tore one of her Kingfishers from its catapult and hurled it into the sea. The winds also blew seawater into the ventilation intakes for the engine room, shorting out her switchboard and disabling her steering controls for about forty minutes."

Nice - It's a Typhoon! My dad who passed in 2017 at age 92 served on USS louisville CA 28 from 1943-46 and went thru (2) Typhoons - ripped seaplane from pontoon (still on catapult) and damaged hanger aircraft doors. The screws come out of the water and you hear them chatter. Take care!

My dad was there . William Albert Mayfield . They lost power in this storm and he was a electrician crawling all over the bowls of that ship to get power restored. Quite a experience.

Didn't look like they had hauled over all hatches and gun covers From the Phillipine Sea across to Formosa to Hong Kong up to Okinawa Typhoon spawning ground. Yee haa.. Horsecock and bug juice now on the mess deck !
