Shotgunning actually proves, to play devils advocate, that the tactic is actually quite sound in-game. Having a lifetime of even surface-level research on the Pacific War, I would say the ONLY thing they really get wrong is CV aircraft accuracy rates, at least until later in the war. And, while having nowhere NEAR archivist-levels of research, I've dug deeper than most into many of the battles.

Ironically shotgunning is the more historically accurate tactic vs homing torps. Granted subs were alot slower than what’s portrayed in game
@traviswilliamking Жыл бұрын
@@sealordmountbatten for scale, I get that bit of inaccuracy. Even allow for it. The homing torps, however, unless applied evenly across all torp seacraft, are an unfair advantage. Which, when logically analyzed, would mean the SSs would be at the greatest disadvantage. So would the BBs, in all actuality. So, I accept the current premise of the game.

Well done, SLM. This situation was a crapshow from the onset, and it is good that more people are being made aware of it in the historical context. Being a naval history buff in general, and the Pacific in particular, I never even knew of the Indianapolis incident until moving here and visiting the Indy War Museum as an Army Recruiter. They have an entire section dedicated to the USS indy.

Thank you for this SLM. It is a great story. I knew that the captain had his record cleared but not the efforts of the 12-year-old to see that it was done. Having spent 20 years in the Navy the idea that the higher echelons scapegoated someone lower to cover problems with their own orders does not surprise me. The fact they did that to an officer does, by my experience, they would have found a few enlisted to court marshal and maybe send them to Leavenworth.

I also want to point out that I completely agree that McVeigh (I think, idk?) was a scapegoat for the incompetence of the US Admiralty at the time. Like why would you deny a DD escort if there was confirmed sub activity in the area, mistake number 1. Not reporting Indianapolis arrival? How the fuck do you miss/not see something the size of Indianapolis, that's just him saying oh yeah I wasn't paying attention while not saying that. Mistake 2, I could go on. This is just sad that they did this to someone to cover up their severe incompetence

A few months ago I was researching Indianapolis' story and the treatment of McVay was absolutely shocking, not just for the ruling, but also because of events in places like Savo Islands; when an admiral decides they know better than the radar, despite not being able to see a thing but gets off with an "oh well, lesson learned" and McVay gets thrown under the bus... The fact he ended up committing suicide makes the whole thing even more shameful. There is one little detail regarding Lt Cmdr Marks; not only did he land his PBY in defiance of orders in order to save lives, the use of the PBY as a life-raft and anchor in open ocean meant it could not take off again and had to be scuttled later and Marks and his crew had go aboard rescue ships. So not only did they knowingly, willingly and directly disobey orders, they even lost their aircraft doing so, and any navy would be proud of that as it's in the best traditions of selfless and courageous naval service, to me they are unsung heroes. And it could be argued that the actions of Indianapolis and her crew removed, at least helped remove the need for Operation Downfall. The worst-case-scenario estimate I read suggest 2 *million* Allied KIA casualties and a potential peak of 500k/month combined KIA/MIA/WIA! I do love SLM's use of WOWS for these kind of videos, it's always been a little innovation that I really appreciate, and in game, I do think Indie is a bit underrated.

A ship that unintentionally sacrificed itself to end the war. Unluckily, had the submarine stumbled upon and sunk the Indianapolis much earlier on the start of it's journey rather than on the return trip, it would have brought a significant delay to the first of the two atomic bombings. The fact that a 12 year-old took it upon himself to investigate the sinking, gather evidence and testimonies from survivors alone to exonerate Captain McVay is in itself impressive, and if i ever had a hobby, it would definitely have been what he was doing at the time, aka. personal investigation work on my own. It was the Navy higher-ups fault for not alerting the Indianapolis to the confirmed danger of submarines given the fact that a destroyer escort already sank from a submarine attack one a week ago not far from where Indianapolis would sail, and to not even allocate a proper destroyer escort of at least 4 ships for such an important and highly-classified mission? I mean, seriously? Also, one of the high-ranking officers getting drunk during just when the Indianapolis broadcasted it's distress call a third and final time? What is this, was the supervising officer of that poor radioman still stuck in the Interwar-Era of isolationist incompetence and malfunctioning torpedoes or what? I'm really hoping to have a drink or snacks with McVay in a dream after writing all of this. He really needs it. He can rest well now, knowing that someone who had a similar passion with history like me like i did at that around that age had cleared him of any wrongdoing, which the Navy tried to blame all onto him and thus use it to make him their scapegoat. Just truly unacceptable. I could only wish one Portland-class was a museum ship with a section dedicated to the entire sinking, the cover-up behind it and Hunter Scott's exoneration of Captain McVay, now THAT would've been truly something incredible to see! Sealord, i truly wanted to ask you when you would release a video about the USS Indianapolis and anticipated it coming out, then finally, here it is. Thank you.

@@concise707 You're reading the wrong stuff, old boy. Probably a Gannon fan. 😝 Anyway, why should King take everything the Brits were "advising" him at face value? Despite those two years of experience, the Royal Navy was hardly spotless when it came to running convoys, and a lot of that "advice" from Dear Dudley turned out to be gratuitous nonsense. King declined to operate convoys without adequate escorts in large part because of the losses the RN and RCN experienced while attempting to do exactly that, but people like you generally ignore that fact, if they ever knew it to begin with. "Delusions of self-importance"? Please. King was the most powerful naval officer in HISTORY, and there was nothing delusional about that. I'm also convinced that 100% of this "Anglophobia" business comes directly from you people. Brooke and Cunningham would put intemperate and self-pitying comments in their diaries like "King must really hate us", generally in a petulant response to not getting their way about something. Americans close to King during the war were very consistent in stating that King's "Anglophobia" was unfounded. OTOH, it was pretty obvious that he didn't trust you lot (especially Winston) any further than he could throw a depth charge. "Perfidious Albion", indeed! Oh, and King didn't have anything to do with court martialing McVay. That was entirely on SecNav James Forrestal.

Anytime I see this story, I always have to compliment the people telling it. This was one of the worst missions given from top brass. Indianapolis could have done this mission had she had an escort with anti-submarine weaponry. she wasn't given any. she was sent out on a covert "1 way trip." This is why any armed forces member gets a "Thank you for your service" from me, even tho I'm not at all patriotic. May they all rest in peace, and may the government never send our citizens on impossibly dangerous missions again, or backstab them for failing to do the impossible. Some orders shouldn't be followed, and even more shouldn't be given to begin with.
