The USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) will be the next aircraft carrier to arrive at Brownsville. Every ship I served on during my 24-year career has been sold to another country or scrapped. My first ship, the USS Terrell County (LST-1157) was sold to Greece. When they were through with her, a group of prior shipmates tried to buy her back from the Greeks. That project fell through, however, when the Greeks removed her engines and drives, and sold her for conversion to a barge. At age 76, it is sad to see them go as it reminds me of my own race to the end...

There was some talk about bringing USS John F Kennedy to Boston, where it could have been moored next to the JFK Presidential Library and Museum. But among the cost of converting the ship to a museum, was the cost of dredging a channel to the library, because that part of Boston Harbor was not deep enough. With the USS Constitution and USS Cassin Young (a WWII destroyer), we're lucky to have some amazing Navy heritage open to the pulbic. But still, it would have really great to have the USS JFK next to the JFK library. I should add, the ship I served on in the Navy that is decommissioned, the USS Nashville, appears to be rotting at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. I know it'll end up as scrap too, but I think diving an Amphibious Assault Ship that was made into an artificial reef would be really cool.

Could they use aircraft carrier as a booster landing barge?
@raptor22652 жыл бұрын
I doubt it, unless they made major modifications to add tons of ballast and lower the CG and freeboard. It could work for Falcon 9, but building a 130+ meter high tower on it would raise the center of gravity up so much that it'd be at extreme risk of capsizing. If they strapped two carriers side-by-side, then perhaps it could work, though it just isn't practical financially.
