SL i exceedingly thank you for your posting of your tour. Being disabled now i cannot walk very far and i have neurological disease which makes such tours near impossible now. I really enjoy you covering the tour by video. God bless.

Laffey II is unkillable and she has fantastic AA capacities...in AL. (her AA will probably be unusable in WOWS because WG don't want to hurt one of their protected class)

The first and so far only time I’ve been to Pat’s Point, she was away for maintenance, so I missed my chance to visit her. I will say this though, as a currently active destroyerman, the relatively spartan conditions on Laffey are not too far removed from how things are nowadays.

Just to tell you this. She is one of my favorite Museum ships. because of the memory that she has with me. From 1952 to 1955 a young sailor from Iowa went down to see a Laffey and served on her throughout the Korean War. He was my great grandfather and I really miss him. He was the guy who got me into everything Navy related. He was my favorite great grandfather. I was so glad to meet him and go on the ship with him three times. My favorite ship in the entire museum ship fleet! God bless the Laffey and God bless her .steel.

The Gearing class is an improved Sumner. Main difference is that the Gearing is a few feet longer, which increases its fuel capacity and therefore its range.

Thanks for the tour! It’s awesome that you have so many museum ships to view unlike the uk who unfortunately had to scrap most of them.

Sorry for the rapidly fluctuating weather here, Mount! If you come back, make sure you pack a "just in case" pair of shorts. The cannon fire you heard MAY have been a live demonstration at Fort Sumter, which you can see from Yorktown. There are multiple forts that do demonstrative cannon firings in that area, including Fort Moultrie/Sullivan and Fort Sumter. If you come back, I hope you can visit some more of the non-ship history that SC has to offer just over in Charleston.

My son and his Boy Scout troop got a chance to stay for a pair of nights on the Yorktown back in 2015. With all of the troop I took them to go see the video that they have playing in that turret. We got out after the movie, and we got a chance encounter with an a much older gentleman. Turns out he was one of the few gentlemen that actually made it out of the turret that day. We were in awe and the look on his face I'll never forget in my life. Just an amazing experience and almost hallowed ground.

In fairness, the Gearing class is basically a Sumner class with a bit more length (~14 feet) to add more fuel capacity. Gearing is more a sub-class of Sumner than a fully separate class of destroyer. Visually, the Gearings have the funnels a bit further apart, with the forward torpedo launcher having some space aft, between the launcher and the after funnel. A Sumner-class will have the second funnel immediately abaft the launcher. I have RADM Becton's book, inherited from my grandfather who entered USCG service around 1944 and served until the mid-1970s, and it's a heck of a read. I need to pick up a paperback copy or reprint so I don't wear out his. And someday I'll get to the actual ship!

I loved Patriot Point. But Laffey"s interior was closed when I went. I think I need to go back just to tour her. I have rotten luck in touring old ships, went to Houston and planned go on to see USS Texas just as they found a massive leak and closed her. I wanted to see Alabama and Kidd on another trip, but a hurricane came and both were closed.

There's something about the old ships that new ships don't have. It's in the look of them. I do't know what it is but new ships don't have the visual appeal.

they seriously need to get her repainted soon. The rule of Naval Museum ships is they have to be kept in the condition they were in at decommissioning, if they start to rust out, or fall into a eye sore state the Navy will take it back and sink it as a reef. Patriot's Point has been extremely lax on the upkeep of these vessels, they just lost the submarine Clamagore not too long ago because of it's deteriorated state, and it was scrapped. would really hate to see that happen to the Laffey as it came close to happening accouple years ago when it was found the lower bottom of the hull was rusted out. but fortunately they elected to had her taken to a dry dock and a new lower hull placed on.. Both Laffey, and the Yorktown deserve better maintenance, and care than what they are getting. and it would be a Great historical loss if they were scrapped, or sunken because of the museum's neglect of them.
