That's in good shape considering how long it sat underwater. That's good engineering. no CAD drawings and laser cutters in those days

Old railroad rails are part of this. It is wrought iron, which is a lot more resistant to rust or corrosion than steel. They had a hell of a time making large plates or other shapes back then, too. The Merrimack had layers of bar stock on its shell. During the battle Monitor was in, it took a hit right on a bolt head and fired it off on the inside like a missile. A crew member rested his head on the inside surface, and a shot to that area really rang his bell!

Anybody notice the large dent from being struck by a cannonball? These dents are also visible in old period photographs of the Monitor.

The Monitor's wreck is located 150 miles from where the US Navy's deep water salvage team is based. Raising the turret was a field exercise

I assume it's upside down?
@centralcrossing47324 жыл бұрын
Yes, the conservation team expects to flip it soon (within the next 10 years), but they must wait on a shipyard to help lift it. They also want as much salt removed from the iron as possible before flipping it upright.

Sunk due to rough waters in December later the same year it battled the Merrimack. I think like 16 sailors died on it

@@d.o.f.t.1578 It's been so many year since I learned about this, that I forgot. Rough water when you only got 2 inches of freeboard must mean a slight breeze.
