Outbound:
USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, and the lead ship of her class. One of the largest warships in the world, she was laid down, launched, and commissioned as CVAN-68, "aircraft carrier, attack, nuclear powered", but she was later redesignated as CVN-68, "aircraft carrier, multi-mission, nuclear-powered", on 30 June 1975, as part of a fleet-wide realignment that year.

This just makes me want to thank all the military personal for what they do....every time they leave port, they have no idea for how long, where they might end up, and what circumstances might develop. I get to sit here in my home office watching them head out to see, and that is a VERY humbling experience....THANK YOU!!!!

Oldest active Aircraft Carrier in the Fleet. It's 47 years old. Looks in pretty good shape except for the current drinking water scandal. The Nimitz, Eisenhower and Vinson are all 40+ years old.

She carried my squadron, VAQ-138 around for 4 years- lotsa places and memories- approaching the anniversary of our 30NOV88 incident.

Anyone here with naval history/knowledge know what the multi-colored letter code is on the starboard side of the control island means? (Just above the "68" lettering).
