I've watched this series for many years back in the 50s. I'm glad to see it again. God bless all who have served and are currently serving. Viewed in California from an Army Engineer Vietnam vet.

Harry Landers was a prominent film and character actor with roles in films, The Wild One, The Ten Commandments, Rear Window, and TV's Ben Casey, Perry Mason, and Star Trek. Tom Laughlin was in South Pacific and as Billy Jack in that film Series. James Dobson (Tennessee) was a character favorite in many military and westerns in film roles in The Flying Leathernecks and the TV series, McMillan and Wife and Love Boat.

My grandfather John D Stallings was CQM on the Salmon during this patrol. He passed long ago and is now among his brothers in the Punchbowl, in Honolulu. His acconut had a lot more than this, but this film was decent summary. A great story.

QMC. Not CQM.

My grandfather fought from Normandy to Germany in ww2 and he said the sub crews were some of the toughest and craziest sob's he ever met.

I understand they have to piece together sections of film footage to make the combat sequences these films and they do a great job, so it is fun to find a goof. Did anyone notice the flack coming up at the planes while they were over the ocean? lol

Seems as if they only have one short bit film of a depth-charge being launched from a destroyer.

Why detract from a story about these great men?

The Japanese navy had flack guns on some of their ships in ww2 so it could be accurate but the scene was probably from a bomber escort.

James Dobson (Tennessee) would have been perfect for the Andy Griffith Show. Andy surely missed out on an endearing and entertaining character. It may have given James the lift he needed in the challenging career as a character actor. Perhaps he would have lived longer as he died of a heart attack at 67. Too young

The U.S Navy had dozens of us Tennessee like folks... Seemed to me at times they liked to put all thee idiots on guns after WWII.... Just my opinion... I learned just like ole Tennessee on an old 22 with no front sight. And I got really good with it too. So did my son in 2009... Should tell ya something about Americans & family heirlooms... I can still shoot straight from the hip.

Both the 3 inch deck gun on the sub, and the 40mm Bofors antiaircraft gun (on cruisers WWII, his 6 aircraft kills), require 2 men to aim. 1 for azimuth, the other for elevation. Just saying. Cheers
@paulredinger4203 жыл бұрын
By that time of the war they would of been 5 inch cannons.

5”x25 side swing breech block, but showing barrel of 3” earlier gun. why yell fire when you as pointer (azimuth control) have trigger pedal in manual mode? Deck sequences are all edits...... doesn’t matter, it’s a TV show, not a documentary
@thekingsilverado3266 Жыл бұрын
@@paulredinger420 Some of thee 5 guns had leveling pedals for the gunners. I took 3 of thee 5 inch guns off subs in the Philly ship yard circa 1986. Gunner could rotate and level aim the guns. I have a 6"shell as a keep sake off the Bowfin after it was whacked during the battle of the Philippine sea the 5 inch gun was trashed. It went to Freeport in Aussie land all they had left for a gun was a 6 incher off an old Destroyer.. The crew liked it much better than the 5 inch gun...
