The fortunate part is that they don't use bow mounts in rough weather, so that crew would be tasked with doing something else :)

I always thought that putting the guns right at the front of The forecastle was stupid. Not only on this class but the Iowas too. It's not like they had a whole lot of excess buoyancy in the front of those slender and beautifully sweeping bows.

It’s the amount of freeboard and draft that these ships have, for the reason of hun placement. Low freeboard on the amidships, deep draft. The bouy effect was severe at the bow area, despite the high freeboard in that section. The gun placement is almost perfect. They also added additional anchor chain to further compensate for forward pitch/dive.
