USS Strong was a Fletcher-class destroyer that was named in honor of Rear Admiral James H. Strong, who famously rammed the Confederate Ironclad Tennessee during the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. Strong was commissioned in August 1942, but her career was cut short less than a year later in the Solomons by a Japanese torpedo, and in the aftermath, one of her officers, Lieutenant Hugh B. Miller would become known as the Navy’s one man Army for his daring exploits after being stranded on a Japanese held island.

Naval Intelligence learned of Japan's Long Lance torpedo early in the war. However, the powers that be decided not to inform the fleet commanders of such a weapon. They claimed that it would tip off the enemy that we knew about it. This absurd blunder cost the Navy many ships and lives. Early in the war no one imagined that the enemy had such a powerful weapon, not even the Navy's leadership. But they would soon find out.

5" guns have mounts, not turrets. Cruisers and above have turrets.

The twin 5" is mounted in a turret.

@@georgeburns7251 Just normal USN terminology. 5" guns and smaller sit on mounts. Whether open or enclosed in steel. On a Fletcher class destroyer the 5" closest to the bow is known as mount 51. The next is mount 52 until you get to the stern mount 55. I served on 2 Fletcher and 2 Allen M Sumner class destroyers. The twin mounts are labeled the same way. In the 1950s several Fletchers lost 1 mount when 3" AAA guns were installed. So mount 53 was gone and 54 became mount 53 and 55 became mount 54. Cruiser and battleship gun mounts are called turrets. On the Iowa Battleships, the 5" twins are mounts not turrets. My dad was in WWI and WWII. It goes that far back. I get tired of these kids in their mom's basement reading a few lines on the web and then get it all wrong on KZbin. There are people like Drach that do an excellent job on naval matters. Avoid bad info.

@@oceanmariner saying mount is just a point of reference. Gun's can be mounted in different ways. Put on sailing ships you have the cannon wheels on or off. Then they can be mounted on a carriage for field pieces. Fortresses and ship's use revolving turrets in the modern era.

@@Joe-rd8we But in the American navy 5" guns are mounts not turrets. Maybe in the Iranian navy it's different.
