USS Turner Joy Vietnam Era Destroyer Tour
We recently visited family in the Pacific Northwest and went on the USS Turner Joy Vietnam Era Destroyer Tour. This particular ship played in role in the Gulf of Tonkin Incident that let to escalation of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. As you know from some of our previous videos, I am a huge fan of military bases, equipment, and history. USS Turner Joy Vietnam Era Destroyer Tour was amazing. I hope you enjoy the video and this series

Our channel follows the day to day activities happening around LaLa Farm. LaLa Farm is a small, family owned farm located just south of the Florida - Georgia line in Glen Saint Mary, FL (Northeast Florida). We focus on producing small scale marketable farm products, while moving toward food self-sufficiency for our own family. We breed Registered Kiko, Boer, and Nubian goats for market and meat. We raise our own poultry for meat and eggs. We grow seasonal fruits and vegetables and maintain a colony of bees for honey and pollination of our plants. The goal of our KZbin channel is to educate and share with our customers, followers, and anyone else interested in the homesteading or small farm lifestyle - our approach to managing the little slice of paradise we call LaLa Farm. Our channel, just like the farm, is truly a family endeavor. On any given week, you may see videos from a number of family members depending on the video topic. Each of our family members has unique interests and skills that they bring to our farm. We would love to have you join us - the Robinson family - on our self-sufficiency and homesteading journey by subscribing to our channel.

Wow, Rick! I loved this video! I wish my father was still around to watch it. He would enjoy it, too, but he would be far more familiar with the features of the ship than me! :-) Thanks for sharing!

On August 2nd 1964 my ship USS Brister DER-327 was moored in Apra Harbor, Guam when we received a message, relayed from Naval Operations stating the Maddox and Turner had been attacked by North Vietnamese gunboats in the Gulf of Tonkin. Within six months we were deployed to the South China Sea with orders to patrol the coast of South Vietnam. We spent most of 1965 patrolling from the DMZ, south along the east coast of Vietnam, then around the horn into the Gulf of Thailand to Phu Quoc Island just south of Cambodia.

Fun video to watch; thanks. Served on DDG-15 and a good share of our underway ops were run alongside the Turner Joy which meant we were often pier mates when we were in port.

If my uncle was alive, he would have enjoyed your tour. He served during Korea and Vietnam. He was on the USS Lake Champlain most of the time. I have only toured the USS Alabama, a FFG that came to port in Ogdensburg, NY (a hour north of us), and all the ships, boats, and sub at Fall River Massachusetts. I enjoyed your tour too. As a Seabee I never went to sea, but I did spend a day in a DC Trainer in New Orleans. That should wake up anyone to respect what our sailors may have to do to save a ship and the sailors on board! Thanks for your service! Take care!

Michael - That is really cool. You have been on a lot of vessels. I served onboard FFG 28 (USS Boone). Thank you for your service as well. I absolutely love military history and try to find out of the way places that address historical military and cultural topics. Look at my travel playlist and there are several videos on military destinations. I used to camp as a kid in NY just west of Ft Drum. Great fishing up there. Be well!!! - Rick

I used to talk via morse code to a signalman on the USS Turner Joy in 1980. His handle was "Skeeter" and we conversed operator to operator quite often. Usually we were moored at pier 1 Navsta San Diego. I was on the USS Henry B. Wilson. Funny thing was I never met him, just talked ZWC with him.

Served on DLG-30..USS Horne..deployed as carrier support off the DMV. At one point we were 35 miles from Haiphong with a carrier. The carrier went south to DMV and left us with destroyer..might alerts were almost every day..two or three would approach us..we went out to sea and the destroyer headed toward shore. we put birds on the rail..tracked and randomly locked on the migs..they would turn around and go back to base..no where can this be found in the records...pretty scary... Very good video..Horne was sunk in Rimpac off Hawaii..she was a good ship...

I was on Gridley DLG-21 during our Westpac in winter/spring '68. When operating up north near Haiphong we encountered the same situation. We would go to GQ, and our 55 Alphas would lock on them, and at around 30 miles range the Migs would turn back. I clearly remember Horne.
