I served on the USS Vermilion from August, 1953 to February, 1955. I was the first division officer. It is a strange feeling to see the ship we lived on, our home as a place where scuba divers play. Steaming in formation, closer to the nearest ships than our turning circle, we worked hard to make sure we didn't collide with another ship and possibly sink. Here she is, sunk on purpose to provide an artificial reef, a very good purpose for this old lady after her time of usefulness has passed. Forgive me, though, if I think it is a dishonor to her service and those who served aboard her for scuba divers to play in her grave.
