You start to realize a level gap when you feel like how you put it "never comfortable". That's how I feel every time I play against someone that has the equivalent level gap. When you get the feeling of never being in control of a point - you start to realize your out of your league in the match. Thanks for putting this on display. Always wanted to watch you play against a player of his caliber.

Great playing. A quick tip on court positioning, Tim. When you're feeling stifled or "uncomfortable" with the tempo of the rallies (point at 5:37 is a good example), it can be helpful to concede a foot or two of court positioning (take a half step back) to give yourself a bit more time between successive balls. This will improve your consistency and also your mental stamina which is important against a big hitter. Particularly given Sam's conservative court positioning, you won't be leaving yourself as vulnerable to court geometry versus if you were playing against someone who was hugging the baseline more.

Great video Tim, thanks for sharing such a fun match! Your intros and reflections of these videos are really eye opening and easy to listen to. When I first saw Sam’s forehand, I thought “holy grip Batman!” Maybe I’m wrong about his grip but I didn’t know people with extreme westerns could hit like that. Sam if you see this, props to you for reaching out to Tim and playing on fire while knowing many people will be watching this video. Then again a top 10 junior is probably used to playing under pressure! Great playing man! Something I wanted to comment on was the difference in serving racket speed. I feel like you have more on the table Tim! Hey Tim your type of growth mindset is hard to find in a player, heck in a person in general. I’m sure you’ll find it in yourself to become a lights out player and even beat a top junior!

great video, Tim! To me, the biggest difference between you (and yes, there are a few - I say that respectfully... you're awesome) is the serve. The so called "most important shot in tennis." His serve was such a weapon that him holding serve was relatively easy. But your serve didn't bother him one bit, so your holds were so much more work. When you have that mismatched dynamic, particularly in a men's match, it's just statistics... the match is over. He seemed to go for percentage tennis in the 2nd set, just blocking back returns that he could probably have teed off on, maybe to be nice, maybe playing percentages that his ground game would outlast yours. But that serve... Anyway, much respect for posting such a humble video where you openly discuss how much better he is. No shame in that - there's always someone worse and someone better. But you availed yourself well and love your stuff!

Had been following Tim's vids...such a humble diligent and competitive chap🍷🎖. Observation: Tim needed 3/4steps to stabilise each time he serves..and finally stabilized like 5ft into the court... irregardless of whether he decides to attack the net(?). (Tim was caught by a deep cross court at 0-15 in the 2nd set..he has to back stretch to retrieve the return) ...contrast that to Sam's more stable 1step footstop after the serve. What do you guys think....something to work on ? 🧐🎬

First of all, you are way better than I am, and I admire your willingness to get out there and get beat. I'll just comment on serving - Sam's serve is super organic and relaxed - clearly years of practice optimizing the kinetic chain. Your serve, while strong, is more rigid and mechanical, and as such simply cannot get to the same efficiency level as Sam in its current form. As a result he gets tons more out of it, more free points, etc. Just shows you that the better players have perfected techniques to such a deep level that even playing a 5.0 player it's night and day as to execution.

Sam's racquet preparation is freakin' outstanding, gets the racquet back early but yet part of a smooth continous motion, whereas hackers like me wait until the ball is crossing the net and try to get the racquet ready, or take it back too soon and hold it, robbing ourselves of the flow of the kinetic chain. Also glad to see Sam hold the racquet with the correct hand ... southpaw power! Nice effort and playing Tim, you are better than 99% of us, the players in 99.99 percentile are just crazy good LOL.

It would help if you showed the score after each point, to show it updating (sometimes it's hard to see if a ball was in). Example: 2:35: was that an ace? If so, great serve, but it's hard to actually see (looked like going wide, dipped back in). Another thing: 4:23, here I can see the ball was in - were you just beaten for pace/taken by surprise? Ball looks reachable, but I'm not exactly top level.
