Ustad Faiyaz Khan - Khamaj Thumri

A real Ustad. No doubt an individual trend setter. Besides, he was one of the luckiest vocalists to have such great patronage. My late father Ustad Azmat Hussain Khansahab Dilrang was his keen fan and also did imbibe few of his fine singing qualities. Heartfelt Tributes. This thumri must have been recorded in the ending period of 1940s.

As a disciple of Pandit Dinkar Kaikini, I often heard this performed in Mumbai by Pandit KG 'Chhotu' Ginde, in the 1980s. I had no idea how extraordinarily fortunate I was to be experiencing that living musical tradition. Pure gold.

This pairs fantastically with the Malini Rajurkar rendition of the same thumri. There the briskness is in full flow, whereas this version can be enjoyed best if one is familiar with the composition. The sthayi here is like a wave of great depth crashing into the shore of the sam - the expectation is what makes it sublime.

Thanks for sharing this. Used to hear it very often in my childhood days on AIR Calcutta A on Sunday nights - National Programme Of Music. This was a favourite canned recording of AIR. Not for nothing was he called the 'Mehfil Ka Baadshah'. The audience musy have been eating out of his hands during such an enjoyable recital. I feel Nazrul's 'kuhu kuhu koyeliya' (rendered by S D Burman) is a tribute to this magnificent Bandish Ki Thumri.
