Yes, I also have a feeling that it was in Dover Lane Music Conference, I was there too at Vivekananda Park, if I am not wrong! And that Bhairavi was matchless! Ustadji again played Malkaunsh with Jakir Hossein as accompanist at Dover Lane Music Conference at Najrul Mancha and while playing Bhairavi again at dawn he suddenly stopped playing at all and instructed us to listen to the birds' chirping at Lake (Rabindra Sarovar) and how their chirping was in tune with Bhairavi he was playing! An heavenly experience!!

You are welcome! Yes I made the original recording at Kala Mandir in Calcutta , it was the culmination of a week long series of artists presenting their renditions of Raag Malkauns .

At the 48.30 mark in the recording, a person in the balcony speaks to Khansaheb, insulting him to such an extent, that he refused to play anymore, The curtains were drawn and Khansaheb left for the green room. Most of the audience became very uneasy as they were mad at the person for upsetting the Ustad to such insults. Many people including myself, Chazz Rook, Now, Kailash Ray used the break to get a chai or use the bathroom when I went back in the hall it seems Vilayat had been persuaded to finish his recital , most of the audience was outside , so I resumed recording and now here it is all these years later.

Is this from Malkauns Samaroha or Doverlane? I have the same file, labelled as Doverlane 1985. Ustad Sabir Khan on the Tabla. He played Bhairavi after this.

Too much effort for making the "Gamakams" is actually , stealing the divinity / beauty of the music. I am surprised why people are afraid to criticize this aspect of his music ! This "exercise" to bend the strings actually distracts me from the music even.

Yes u are right the technical part should never supress the melody but your comment can be applicable to other artists but not Vilayat as he was technically so powerful that if you listen very carefully you will realise all the gamak tans are flowing natutally like a river not mechanically like all the other artists No doubt Vilayat is the greatest Sitarist of all times that is evident from this audio also with very poor sound quality

@@shankargopal4150 yes anybody is free to disagree and make his or her own choice but having said that being a neighbour of Budhaditya ji in purna das road kolkata for last 22 years I have visited his house on two occasions for getting his vinyl records signed he himself had told me that in his opinion Vilayat khan was by far the greatest sitarist and he himself was influenced by Vilayats left hand techniques only thing he said he wanted to change Vilayats tonal quality of the main string

@@rajibmoitra2837 You are most fortunate to be a neighbor of Budhadityaji and it is also thrilling to know that he lives at PurnaDasRoad. I myself lived there closer to Gol Park but this was in 1970 and I was in class 2. I did not know anything of Hindusthani music then, but my father was a great fan of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan saheb. Yes, you can see the influence of Vilayat Khan Saheb on Budhadityaji's technique and I think there is also a KZbin interview where he makes his admiration of Vilayat sahab quite clear. And as you say the tonal quality is one big difference, and Budhadityaji has also spoken of his relentless efforts to improve the tonal quality of his sitar, even to the extent of breaking it many times. But the result of the efforts is now very apparent. No sitar sounds like Budhadityaji's sitar and that itself is a big factor in my admiration. Actually I was just comparing to have some fun. All great artists reach such heights that a personal favorite is just a personal choice and nothing else.
