Ginger: Welcome to US Tzu Chi 360. I'm Ginger Chang. Today we continue with our special on local farming. To tell us more, we have Rachel Franz, the co-founder of Big Apple Edibles and urban farmer on the show with us again. Welcome Rachel! First off, why is it better to buy organically produced food?
Rachel Franz: Organically and locally produced food is very good for personal health because it has a higher nutrition value. If it's eaten 3 days after it's been harvested -- it's much more healthier for you. Also it's much more healthier for the environment because there are fewer trucks, traveling fewer distances if it's local. And if it's organic, there are fewer chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Also the local economy is strengthened when you purchase farm produce from a local farmer. It's good for the economic region as well.
Ginger: I think for most people, the reason why they choose not to buy organic is because they see it's expensive. But does it have to be pricey?
Rachel Franz: Absolutely not! It is right now, it's more expensive right now then conventionally grown produce but the more popular it gets, the more pressures there will be and the producers find a way to do it more cheaply. And the competition will begin to favor the organic farmers.
Ginger: Well, let's go see the Dervaes' view on the importance of conscientious consumption.
In our next segment, Footprints, we introduce you to Chin-Lan (Chen) and her husband, Chu-Lai Chen -- two Tzu Chi volunteers in New York not only known for their superb culinary skills, but the lush little green grange in their backyard as well .

There is always some rude people out there. You guys are doing a fine job. Keep up the good work. I sell my garlic to vendors in the farmers market and avoid dealing and bargaining with the little customer. Greetings from Colorado ✌

I'm from southern California. Apparently, you're not old enough to remember some of the snow fall in the foothills in east San Diego County. Ugh.
