I think Mr. Carrick would also be a phenomenal teacher. His descriptions about the very complex principal percussion position and set of instruments is so naturally informative and at ease. I had not realized how many logistics go into setting up each percussion section player and using the best of their abilities---well before the actual concert. Lots of considerations for a principal percussion professional. This is a superb summary of the section. Well done!

I am also a percussion major, I love the marimba and the xylophone. But of course the orchestra won't have that super dignified sound without the tympani. Thanks so much for this video. I am also now an orchestra conductor and arranger, I shared this video to my percussionists.

That first part vaguely reminds me of the movie "prova d'orchestra" by Fellini

I usually play the bassoon, but I recently got the chance to play in a percussion ensemble which was an eye opener and a lot of fun. I just started playing the Contrabassoon and I’m pretty sure it plays lower notes than the bass drum.

What about the marimba? Or is that a type of Xylophone?
@beverlyhawkins4564
@beverlyhawkins4564 6 жыл бұрын
This answer is from Keith Carrick: The xylophone and marimba are both made of wood, but differ in their pitch range. The xylophone is like a violin and the marimba is like a cello.

The marimba does have a lower range than the xylophone but it also has a much mellower, less piercing sound. That's what it's really known for.

it also depends on the mallets you use. The mallets changes the timbre of the certain percussion.
