I love how high-level musicians talk about their role in the orchestra. It's great way to conceptualize the instrument as applied to big orchestral works, but also shows the respect these musicians have for listening to the composer, conductor, and their colleagues. I aspire to achieve such a beautiful, warm dark and mellow tone. I am a bass trombonist in a jazz band, and tenor trombone will always be my favorite but I do love bass trombone.

Beautiful playing Graeme. Well done on the explanation. Very introductory but 12yr old me would've been captivated by that. I picked the trombone in 7th grade because of the uniqueness of the slide and the styles of play (I listened to a lot of jazz at the time).

2:50 contrabass trombones most certainly aren't that tall The only especially tall trombone I'd assume he's referring to would be the straight bass trombones pitched in G which stopped being manufactured by anyone decades ago or contrabass sackbuts which would be much taller than he is

Yeah, the trombone is quite unique and sitting in the brass section requires a certain character. They don´t have to play that much solo music, they get bored or start making fun and finally will steel music from other instruments.
