Thanks for putting this together, sports production needs more coverage of it's own!

This is very informative and helpful content! I would definitely like to see more videos like this in regards to setting up the cameras, the in's and out's of the cameras and what some of the functions do. Im starting to learn about this type of work and I really want to do my best on it. Thank you!

Awesome video kid! Freelance Camera Op 30 years+ here in Orlando. Great editing also. What a great career to have. Talk to the broadcast folks and try to get on their crewing lists. It's like double the rate. I mostly do broadcast but I also do in-house cam when needed.

I've noticed two things: As a camera operator, do you find the camera already prepared and set? Do you have mechanical focus with this huge box lens? Thanks for documenting this BTS!

Great question! It really depends; I'll either find the camera set up by the Broadcast Engineer or I will build it myself if the camera was being used at a different venue the night before, for instance, and couldn't be set until the next morning.

College is a great option to get your foot in the door and those skills built up, but it's certainly not a requirement. It's all about finding an opportunity in your area to connect with a production company and start working your way up the ladder.

Curious do you do have to do anything other than sports broadcasting to support your or do you just do supports broadcasting
@ashton-g
@ashton-g 24 күн бұрын
Mostly sports broadcasting just because that's most of the available work in the Utah market. I've done a few other shows unrelated to sports, but sports are consistent and pay the bills right now lol

Why is there a 10 foot Triax going into another 10 foot Triax going into another Triax. Bunk setup lol
@ashton-g
@ashton-g 24 күн бұрын
Needed to use two jumpers for the length from our panel box. Nothing wrong with using two Triaxs like that; didn't need 250ft either for a 20ft run

Im interning at my college while completing this film degree, this is all I want to do. Hopefully this internship gets me a real position. Did you get a degree for anything related to this? How did you start off? Thanks
@ashton-g

That's awesome dude!! It'll lead to something; just stay persistent, be a good person, and keep learning as much as you can. I literally just completed my film degree and started by interning at my college as well. You're definitely on the right track! -- I'll be making an update video soon explaining my experience in more detail and tips for starting out in the industry. Keep an eye out for that and thanks for your comment!

can u get to keep the footage from ur camera on ur own hard drive if u want?
@ashton-g
@ashton-g Жыл бұрын
If you're cool with the director and broadcast engineer/technical manager then you probably could; although it depends on the scale and distribution of the production. Typically with larger productions with intricate distribution contracts, such as a UFC match, there's certain copyright issues that prohibit that "under-the-table" distribution (or saving) of the footage.

These cameras don’t have recorders. As noted, sometimes a camera might be able to get some footage for their resume reel or if the show has special meaning. But in order to get the footage it has to be recorded by someone in the replay room and then they have to copy it to a drive in a format the camera op can use at home.

How much camera price? Please ask him.
@mikecumbo7531
@mikecumbo7531 7 ай бұрын
Roughly $100k, excluding the lens. That’s for a camera body with 7” viewfinder, tripod, pan head, CCU (camera control unit) and remote panel for the video engineer. Lens and zoom/focus controls are extra.

What college degree did you get if any?
@ashton-g
@ashton-g Жыл бұрын
A Film or Broadcast Production degree certainly can help because there's a lot of schools who offer live production experience through their school's athletic events, but there's not a required level of education to enter the industry. Going into it without any formal training can be more challenging, but doable if you network yourself into an entry position such as a production assistant or utility on a small local production.

In-house?
@ashton-g
@ashton-g Жыл бұрын
I should've been more clear about what that meant. In-house, or "in-venue" meaning I am contracted to work the show production for the event itself and the fans in attendance (the jumbotron board show). This is different than broadcast production trucks where they bring in their own crew and equiptment to a venue to broadcast on television (ESPN, Fox Sports, PAC-12, etc.).
