It's remarkable just how close our setup matches yours - both in hardware and software. The one extra thing I've found that has made any kind of post audio work a breeze is the addition of a Hyperdeck Pro to our audio rack; the X32 sends each of its outputs into a few Blackmagic Audio to SDI converters and those are daisy-chained to attach each audio track into a separate SDI channel. The beauty of the Hyperdeck is that it can record 16 channels of audio, so in addition to our live program records with stereo mixdowns, we also get a video track with each independent "raw" audio source completely isolated and married to the video. It's the same concept as your laptop multitrack idea, but removes the need to do any syncing later (and has a smaller footprint). Thanks for the behind the scenes look!
@madsastvad Жыл бұрын
Can I check my understanding: You run a cable for each audio input out to a audio->SDI converter (with a max of 4 channels per converter) and piggy back them as needed running the program feed in as SDI to begin with? Giving you a program video record with the program stereo mixdown and up to 14 channels of mono channel iso records?
@daltonrandall4348 Жыл бұрын
@@madsastvad Yes, I think you understand! The X32 rack has several balanced audio outputs, so we just run those straight into the SDI embedders. We use then just use two of the X32 aux outputs to send the mixed, stereo feed to the Hyperdeck mini. Thus, at the end of each show we have the full program recording as was mixed live, as well as a separate recording of the edited video show but with completely separated, "raw" (pre-fader) ISO tracks of audio. If you take the Hyperdeck Pro file and drop it into an NLE, you have the entire stem of audio to work with. You'd obviously have to do more editing work with that file, but if you ever need to fix something, you have complete freedom. Or, even if there were no major problems, it allows you to do a complete remix of the entire show (incredibly helpful if you are recording a concert or other situation with musical elements that require precision mixing). You can do similar things like this video shows running the tracks over dante into an audio DAW, but I have had issues in the past with sync and drift that can absolutely ruin a long show. This way, everything is 100% perfect and you still have access to all of the tracks. If you would like any more info, feel free to email me at daltonrandall89 at g-mail; I love talking this stuff and seeing how different people do things!

@@daltonrandall4348 thx a bunch, Dalton. Super helpful. I'm piecing stuff together for non-profit work, so it's work in progress and I'm definitely here to learn. My experience so far has been to avoid post processing if at all possible, just never have the time, but I agree sometimes nice to be able to fix a thing or two. I've mostly done iso records on cameras and (the very few) audio tracks with embedded timecode from tentacle syncs on all of them to allow me to piece it together after the fact, but that does take a bit of time setting up and occasionally one of the sources won't be recording. I can see how your solution is quite fast for post production. Can I ask - do you do any iso records for video sources? I have toyed with constellation 2ME and extreme iso sdi combo which would allow plenty routing, program and iso recrods on the extreme and streaming from the latter as well. Being a bit budget conscious I've also toyed with running decklink cards in beefy computer and doing almost everything in OBS/vmix. They are so fast nowadays you can do almost everything including iso records plus I quite prefer the flexibility of software based compositing over the atem system. I know it's maybe not quite as fail safe, but it has worked for me for many a stream with no hickups (not doing iso records, though). Sorry, that was a bit of a ramble. I might hit you up on that email. Thx again
@daltonrandall4348 Жыл бұрын
@@madsastvad I agree with you 100% - I avoid post processing as much as possible as well. The audio stems are mostly for protection; let's say you have an open mic that should have been muted and caused background noise... or you have two people talking and one is quite a bit louder than the other... any number of things. You can completely fix it and not have to worry. But you're right, the idea is that you won't ever have to touch them (or, in some situations they are invaluable for overall post mixing like the kinds of events I alluded to previously). Don't forget, though, that I also have a stereo mix from the show itself so in most cases there is no need for post. Just having the stems is so much nicer than having to deal with an external solution or sync audio from ISOs (in my opinion). All of that is a total hassle. We do record camera ISOs, but we do those in-camera... it's just easier and requires less hardware to deal with. One could get a Shogun for every source and route SDI to it and get another SSD for it, etc., but... yeah, I think you get the picture. :) I actually also do run vMix in tandem with our ATEM now - each has some pretty major strengths over the other, and they are a great pair - but I never do recording on the vMix PC. In my experience it's just always better not to tax a switching machine as much as possible while it is doing production-critical work. Everyone has their preferences, though!

Great overview and a nice clean well planned setup Thibaud... I note you are using DJI RS2's and BMD cameras in preference to standard PTZ cameras - Do you find that approach provides you with a better quality and more flexible setup?
@MiddleThings2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! We're actually building the solution that transforms RS2 + BMPCC into PTZ Camera (Middle Things APC-R) . Much better quality than regular PTZ, and flexible, but a little less convenient than a PTZ camera in terms of setup time ( you need to calibrate the gimbal, etc) . But worth it :)
