As someone who worked at Starbucks in Utah, mormons do go to Starbucks they just get the drinks that aren’t explicitly coffee-based. The refreshers are super popular (even though they do have unroasted green coffee in them) but they generally turn a blind eye to it. They also order hot chocolates like crazy. Ps. Fun fact about the word of wisdom: Joseph Smith and his homies used to chew tobacco and spit it on the floor like animals and their wives were sick of cleaning it up, so they asked the men to stop and they got so offended that they wrote the word of wisdom where they agreed not to use tobacco anymore but they made the wives give up their “vices” which was tea and coffee. That’s why Mormons can’t drink tea or coffee.

I just wanted to say, in many studies, sugar was found to be more addictive (in the pure physical sense) than caffeine, cocaine or opioids such as morphine and heroine. It can also cause severe personality shifts, depression, confusion and fogginess. What is even crazier, the sugar industry knew this and suppressed it in the 60s until now, often hiring the same "scientists" that protected the tobacco industry and later to "debunk climate change" for the oil industry. So sugar addiction is no joke. So I actually felt for you when you said you had a sugar addiction. You make great vids by the way

The basic concept originates from pharmacy soda fountains, I think. When those died out the concept of cream sodas with actual creams in them did, too, until some modern franchises especially where there's lots of Mormons apparently, revived it. I imagine it to taste a bit like a float with the ice cream melted into it. There's a fancy pharmacy with an old timey soda fountain and slow churned ice creams where I live. They have 'egg cream' sodas that are sorta like this on the menu. Place is delicious but expensive. Such a vibe, though.

Love seeing other people's local favorites, 5star chili in Cincinnati, Carolina red hot,Georgia boiled peanuts (actually all around in the south) Rochester white hots, i never would've guessed that pop done coffee style would evolve into a whole local flavor profile like that and the story behind it is interesting too (if you're Mormon and promise to be quiet i'll buy and sneek you a coffee if you'd like.)and i look forward to visiting Utah and experiencing a Mormon soda (POP)!!😋

Literally one of the reasons I never became Mormon. I can let go of coffee, but I'm literally boiling water for tea as we speak, though the missionaries I talked to said I can have herbal teas, so maybe that's another grey area.

Herbal teas aren't made from the tea plant so they usually don't have caffeine, which makes them okay I guess from a mormon perspective. Tdlr; We call herbal teas "tea" but they technically aren't "tea," which contains caffeine.

Coffee is not allowed in mormonism. At first I thought, okay I guess they abstain from Caffeine but it has nothing to do with Caffeine, you can have as much caffeine as long as it's not coffee or tee. So if it's hot drink then they can't drink anything hot but what about Iced coffee? or hot chocolate? It is a little weird.

I'll take a genuine egg cream, a pilk, or an Italian soda over some coffee creamer poured into a soda any day. Solid video, though, in spite of the absolute lack of awareness of American pop culture in the last century.

I grew up in Northern Utah in the 80s and 90s. Never heard of this soda thing before. Of course I've heard there are some other major changes. Growing up we called it "pop". From what I've heard, most Utah residents are just calling it "soda" now, and the US region that calls it "pop" is rapidly shrinking. One of the things I really miss is going into a diner and ordering a "scone", and you would get a plate-sized piece of fried bread, usually with a side of honey butter. I remember trying to ask for a scone outside of Utah for the first time and getting a confused look in return.

Swig and Fiiz soda shops are popping up here in Texas now. There's a Swig getting ready to open in the closest town to me. I saw the logo on the building and had to look it up and see what it was. It makes sense though. It's hot as blazes here, people love sweet drinks, and you don't have to get out of your air conditioned car to pick up a cold drink from the drive through. We've got iced tea shops like HteaO, and Dutch Brothers, Starbucks, Dunkin, and Sonic already. Swig and Fiiz ought to fit right into the mix.
