Hi John. Thanks for watching. I have another one that I'm going to put up here in a bit that I use for probing for black sands when I'm out in the field that's similar but a little different. It's a little more work than this one but it makes for stronger magnetic force from the magnets. Stay tuned. New generation Miller Table videos about finished as well.

Hi Michael and thanks for watching. Rare Earth or Neodymium magnets are a somewhat new technology. They are as far as I know the strongest magnets made. They are rated in power such as N35, N50, N52. etc. The stronger N50 series are the best for this. I buy mine from Ebay but you can also pick them up on Amazon and at your local Home Depot stores in the nut and bolt areas. On Ebay do a search for Rare Earth Neodymium Disc Magnet N52 and you will find them.

Great Idea. I didn't have anything on hand you listed, but managed with 1 1/4 PVC pipe and cap ends, aluminum tubing, 1 inch REM with nut and bolt screwed into aluminum tubing, 1 1/8 x 1/4 inch spring, two washers and electrical tape. If you watched my video on the black sand walking stick, I use my walking stick whenever I go hiking and you would be surprised at the places you will find black sand and gold. I only dig in spots I find large amounts of black sand. Whether in a stream or dry land, these will help you find the gold.

Thanks for sharing this idea. Made a similar one to it today. Only changes that I made were the spring was internal over the bolt and I had a lug and washer at the handle to allow for easy pulling of the bolt. This allows me easily collection without having to hold the spring compressed. Also, smooth release of the material when I retract the handle without any chance of pinching my hands with the spring.
@utahavalanch9 жыл бұрын
Derek Smith Hi Derek. Thanks for watching. Good idea. One thing I like about putting up these videos is that I find that many people come up with different ideas for doing things and I learn a lot from them. I am finding also that if you don't use the spring but let the bolt with the magnets rest on the bottom. You then pick up the magnetite and to clean it off just hold onto the head of the bolt and let the pvc shell drop. The bolt moves up faster than the magnetite can keep up with it. Works even better if you are dropping the magnetite into a container of water. I usually collect all the magnetite I can and then process it for gold. Don't get much put it's something to do. :-)

Very nice LS. Looking forward to your seeing the video of your latest rendition of your deep sump Miller table! Now off to the build : ))
@utahavalanch4 жыл бұрын
twotwentyswift One thing I’m doing a little differently now on the longer probes is using a length of 1/4” threaded Rod inside like the smaller ones except without the spring on top. Sometimes if you get a lot of black sand it’s hard to shake the magnet loose. So with the rod, I can wrap my hand around the lower part of the tube and pull the rod up and when the black sand gets to my hand it falls off. If you saw my video on the walking stick magnet, I’ve done the same with it. I have the rod sticking up into the handle so I have plenty to get a grip on. Also I can remove the handle and put a cap with a hole in it to make it into a regular probe. I am now buying 3/4”x3/4” rare earth magnets from EBay to put on the end of the rod in my walking stick. This gives it some really strong power. I also have a 2” version with a 148 lb lift magnet for black sand fishing. Now that is a beast.😝👍. Gets a fair amount of gold caught up in the black sand. I made a mini table of the new design and as I run it I’m finding different things i want to try on it. So it’s still in progress but I’m really liking it so far. It catches runaway flakes further down the table so you don’t have to run all the cons if a couple get away from you.
@twotwentyswift4 жыл бұрын
@@utahavalanch Thanks for letting me know about your upgrades. I just happen to have a few lengths of threaded rod in my shop so I'll put one to use. I admire the fact that you don't rest on your laurels but are constantly looking for ways to improve things. I watched a video on KZbin here that showed a guy throwing out one of those big fishing magnets and he brought up a touch of gold with the black sand and I wondered how effective that would be. Hearing you confirm that opens up new possibilities to try. I'm also planning to build one of your hand dredge pumps. What would we do without cheap abundant PVC for all our projects, haha. I've even heated up a section of 4" PVC and made a retention sheath for one of my hatchets, later I went to Kydex and now make retention holsters and knife and ax sheaths with that like the manufacturers do. Being retired is great, isn't it!
@utahavalanch4 жыл бұрын
twotwentyswift No problemo. I’m constantly working on new ideas that come along, usually when I’m running one of my projects. Yea, the magnet on the line is called magnet fishing. It is good way to get a little gold out of hard to get to places. However getting the Black Sand off the magnet is the problem. So I bought a 2” 148 lb lift magnet. I mounted it to a 3/4” PVC screw on cap and now I can remove the ram on my 2” hand dredge and replace the suction leather with the magnet and then put a cap over the end of the tube. I end up with basically a 2” version of my black sand probes with a whole lot of attitude. If you hit a good pocket of black sand in a stream, you may end up with 5 pounds of sand and gold on the end of it. Big Cottonwood Canyon above Spruces campground is good for that. Yep, the hand dredge is the only way to go in a stream. Beats a shovel hands down. Also some of the black sand still has gold imbedded inside of it so save it all and during the winter you can crush it and get more gold. Now you have the Miller Table and so you can easily separate the gold from the BS. If you make my hand dredge, be sure to watch the upgrade video to it and use the leather pump cup instead of the Plummer’s plug. You can buy 2 - 2” leather pump cups here. gold-n-sand.com/collections/all/products/leather-cups-for-x-stream-pro-hand-pump These are made just for the hand dredges. Oh, yea, if you get up Big Cottonwood, go to where they had the big mud slides awhile back and get samples. That mud is old ancient river mud that has big gold in it. Yippers, being retired is great but I miss not getting weekends and holidays off. 😢
@twotwentyswift4 жыл бұрын
@@utahavalanch Boy, you sure do have some great ideas. I'm only about 20 minutes away from that slide area but never would have considered trying that. I came into this thinking I'd spend all my time along a cool stream in the mountains among the trees and now you have me thinking in a different direction. But the surroundings will still be my priority before the gold, unless I get that "fever" I keep hearing about. And honestly, I don't expect to make any money doing this, but if I can find a bit of color once in a while to keep it interesting I'll be happy. Thanks so much for the link to the cups. I do a bit of leatherwork but just ordering the first set would be great. The high-quality bike pumps still use the leather seals so that tells you something. Sometimes I have to remind myself that our homes are sitting on an ancient lake bed and that my own yard might be a fun place to start but there's not much adventure in that so I'll save that for a later time. I'm headed down to Milburn tomorrow to do some fence repair on my pasture so I'm going to give Fairview canyon a try as long as I'm there. I didn't get the black sand magnet probe made today but got my miller table mounted to a nice Husky container so it'll be at 3.5 degrees and rotate up for storage underneath when I'm traveling. Thanks again LS, you're the best!

I bought a 2" one that will fit inside my Hand Dredge and I can replace the leather cup on the shaft with the magnet and use it to fish for Black sand. It will lift 148 pounds and it will collect a lot of black sand at a time.

But if it's positive then I give it a try. I'm still doing the research on that part but I can show you how to make one and you can try it for your self. Well, got most of my first Miller table built today. Tomorrow I start applying the Helmsman and the Chalkboard paint coats. I kinda upgraded the spray dam. I made two of them. One close to the PVC sprayer.with a gap on the top instead of the bottom creating a kind of spillway then the second one with the gap on the bottom to reduce overspray. One thing though. I wanted ask how you made the sump at the back of the table. It appears the green painted section is raised a bit but of course even six coats of chalk paint doesn’t make that big of a step-up. Any suggestions? Thanks
@utahavalanch6 жыл бұрын
Hi John, sounds like you are coming right along quite nicely. I experimented with that design 2 years ago and it worked OK but not quite like I figured. You need to keep the dam rather low because the outer edges of the water tend to flow toward the middle as they come over the dam causing an imbalance of water and more current in the middle. But give it a try and try to make it so you can put in different height dams. That's the whole idea of building it yourself. So you can learn and make changes as you go. Then you will make another one with those changes and so on. I've ended up making 36 different tables over the years and one table gives you ideas for the next and so on. If you are talking about the table in the Urban prospecting video, yes, the green deck is 3/4" higher than the bottom of the sump. I took a 1/4" board for the bottom and glued a 3/4" piece of pine onto it and left a 2" space at the back for the water bar to sit down in a hole. This makes it so the weight of the water above the water bar cancels out any turbulence and makes for a smoother flow. Kind of like what you are trying to do but below the deck instead of above it. I love how it works. I'm trying to get the second video of a 2 video series finished on it. Another one for you to try. :-)

I live about 25 miles south of St.Louis MO. To find gold do i have to find black sand?
@utahavalanch9 жыл бұрын
Luke Thedrifter Hi Luke, I appreciate your watching. That is a very good question. I almost always find black sand and magnetite associated with the gold I find and so I also wondered, the same thing. Now that we have these rare earth magnets it’s easier to try to find out. I started using the longest of those probes in the video to test areas in a local dry stream bed and every time I found a pocket with enough magnetite to pretty much cover the head of the magnet I found small amounts of gold. In areas where there wasn’t any magnetite, I found no gold. I worked some very nice looking streams that didn’t have any magnetite and after running a number of buckets of material through the sluice from them, I found no gold. I have spent the summer with a new walking stick probe that I have been doing a lot of testing with and I am finding that if there is enough magnetite to cover most of the head of the magnet there is a good chance you will find some gold. I have been very surprised at some of the unusual places I have tested that I have found small amounts of gold. Like mud puddles in parking lots and on older back roads especially in campgrounds, and sight seeing turnoffs, sand on the edge of the roadways, construction fill dirt. culverts going under highways, dirt along side hiking trails, kids sand boxes, etc. I am usually only able to get small amounts of material to test but 60% of the time I find a little gold in it. I will continue to test as I get out and about this summer and I will do a short video on some of what I am finding. But right now it’s looking like if you find a good amount of magnetite, there is a good chance of finding some gold. And I live in a state where “There Is No Gold” :-)
