Hi Shane, this is Bill, the Panning Professor at Gold -N- Detectors. Thank you for the shout out and coverage. Sorry I was out when you were in on Monday. I could have told you about a customer doing this same operation more than 20 years ago. He termed it "fishing for gold". Yes, as you proved, the process works. He 'fished' off of the foot bridge near the library. To clean up his black sand, he used plastic (clean) peanut butter jars and a vertically mounted paint can shaker. After agitating the gold to the bottom of the jar, he could safely discard the black sand from the top level. Then he used that same blue finish pan to do the final separation. Enjoyed your video.

@@Klesh I paused the video at 1:39 I have something I want you to look at, 1st I've been noticing for the last couple of months that there are anomalies in 99% of all videos, One that I will point out is at the time stamp 1:39, I take screenshots and zoom in and I see all kinds of strange things, At that time stamp take a screenshot, Zoom into the Gray clump of vegetation, look to the left side and there is something peeking out, looks like an elephant trunk among other things I see. I see a lot of stuff everywhere, it's crazy I know. No, I'm not tripping, So far one other channel is starting to see what I see.

It seems that everyone is an expert.... so here's my two cents worth! Try building a miniature fractionating table. It has a large rectangular corrugated surface, angled from top left corner to bottom right corner. A stream of wet black sand is trickled (using running water) onto the top left corner of the table, and as it drains away to the bottom right corner the elements separate, because of their differing Periodic Table weight properties. The fractionating table has a vibrator attached to it, in the form of an electric motor with an offset weight... like an orbital sander. The vibration, and the gravity feed, does all the work for you. Look up some stuff from old sand mining operations from the late 1960s. That's when I saw it happening in the flesh. When I was in primary/elementary school, they took us to a sand mining refinery to see how it all worked. Down the lower side of the little rainbow spectrum of elements that appeared, as if by magic, out of the sand (on the bed of the fractionating table) there was a thin band of gold particles. They told us that there was enough gold yielded every day to fund the entire operation (which was huge, with great big earthmoving machines and a factory sized building) and that the rutile, zircon, silica, and ilmenite they were mining was all pure profit. Hope that helps you cut down on drudge time... you'll have to build a table and do some experimenting of course... but after that, it's all cream! Good luck man, and thanks for the vids.

If put a handkerchief over the magnet, when you pull it off, all of the black sand will drop off and the magnet will stay clean and you can rinse the handkerchief from the back and get the last amount that is left on it.

Handkerchief is probably the best suggestion I've heard. I don't want to use plastic, because it's hard to clamp and will most likely break. I thought about using a crown royal bag, since it already has pull strings. Thanks for watching and the suggestion! atb -KG

I watched this video for the second time. I have a suggestion for you, As with all suggestions if you like it , Try it, If not you know where the trash can is. Select your rocks and spots that you would prospect during good weather. when bad weather comes and the river floods, Wait for it to be safe and practical to use the magnet. You may need a pole and extra weight. You would have more of a chance for more and larger gold with the black sand if it has not had the chance to sink below the black sand. Good Fortune to You.

I was just in that area a couple of weeks ago. We stopped on the side of the hwy and I filled up 2 thirstbuster cups with dirt and rock and panned it when I got back home in Florida. Found a bunch of fine gold and a couple of flakes,,,and also what I think is silver. I love that area up there!

Jason's Out There Gold is paramagnetic, not nonmagnetic. Actually, anything that is nonmagnetic can be attracted to a strong magnet. You can use a very strong magnet to bend a stream of water.

isn't that creek basically a giant sluice box.....your magnet is separating the gold from the black sand before you even get it out of the creek....the majority of the gold is still in the spot where the magnet landed in the water....just with less black sand around it....separating the magnetics after you baked it is pretty much a smaller scale of how you gathered your material back at the creek.....think of all the gold you left behind .....would't it be better to just grab a bucket of dirt from the creek bottom then separate it later to get ALL the gold in one spot

that's kinda what I think too. I would get s sort of curved pry/shovel that would actually dig deeper and have a chance to retain some fallen-off gold(?) .... and some "bar", magnets that would also penetrate the sand. I would think the magnet idea works but of course only picks up the flakes of gold that are superior to the iron oxide(or whatever it is). That is slightly above the metallic stuff, but within the bulk of the metallic stuff. I think I'm going to do some drawings ....

The big difference is wet vs dry. Wet, a concentration of black sand will hold the gold with it due to surface tension. (same reason we add jet dry when panning). Dry, it's much easier to pull off the magnetics, leaving the gold in the blonds.

Clear Creek gold tends to be very fine so there is not much chance of flakes or pickers that you loosing out on.

I got my first gold pan there...along with a bad case of "THE FEVER" ..very hard to cure for a resident of central Ohio😖..sadly I just lost that pan this weekend in a moment of rookieness (yeah I think that's a word😋)...turned my back for just a second and the current swiped it away..Any way love that shop and all of Golden! Did this in a similar manner just to clean from lots of black sands.....used magnet inside a ziplock plastic bag,,worked pretty well,,much easier than cleaning off the magnet every pass.... I did watch the entire video was very interesting I have used a magnet for pulling black sand out of concentrates. The electric panning wheel with the spiral riffels works really good I had one back in the late 70's and 80s , for the short time I had it I recovered approx 20-35 lbs of black sand and out of that maybe 1oz.of free gold.

You might try wrapping your magnet like a gift, using heavy duty saran wrap, or industrial stretch wrap, securing it with rubber bands. Much easier to recover the sand from the magnet by simply unwrapping it in your bucket. Great idea though, and you never know what else you might pick up with your magnet. If it was me, I'd run your sands through a miller table. Very effective, but somewhat time consuming. This might make a good project for those cold winter days when you've still got the gold bug, but don't feel like freezing to death in the river. Love your videos - please keep it up!

Used to do this in cherry creek when we were kids. We collect the magnetite and then dad would put cyanide solution in the buckets to leach the gold out of the mag. Great video took me back to the '80s.

use to use a wet vac ( gen & 100' cord from truck ) to vacuum out the pockets of visible gold / black sand at 11 mile canyon near the Springs come home and pan . Water was so cold it would cramp up hands when first trying to scoop it out manually.This was in the 80's ( gold at @$850 oz ) , now who knows ? Back then the rangers rarely patrolled .

here is a trick I use, put the magnet in a zip lock baggie, zip it shut around the rope, get most of the air out. When you pull it up hold the bag and magnet in the bucket and remove the magnet from the bag. the black sand will drop off once the magnet is pulled out, put the magnet in the bag and repeat. It works, bring extra baggies they get tore up on the rocks. Good luck.

put your magnet in a zip lock then take it out to release the black sand......much faster and you don't loose any. most off the gold is below the black sand, you left it there. pull it out with your pvc suction tube and run it thru a bazooka sluice.

We always used magnets over our sluices to remove the magnetics... We called it the magnetic bridge. Magnets in a wooden box... Oh, and try an orbital pattern when panning.

I have done this in Arkansas. While finding the black sand I also found a large magnetite crystal. No gold, but you only asked if anyone else had tried this technique. Mine is better though because I use a plastic bag over a rare earth magnet so that I can separate the sand easier from the magnet!

Yes, I have done this in Arizona many years ago ( I am 73 yrs old). I used a speaker magnet. I also suggest you crush your residual black sand and pan it again. If you want to get more technical, wash the black sand (let it sit awhile) in nitric acid. Be careful to flood flush with water to remove the nitric acid and do this outdoors. Nitric acid is dangerous stuff.

The thought occurs to me that while you are 'Magnet Fishing for Gold', and only coming up with small particles of it, you could be missing out on the nuggets. If there is gold dust in that stream, there are bound to be a few good sized nuggets as well. What you should do if you want to find more than just dust, is use the magnet fishing to test a location behind a big rock, panning it out as you go to help identify where the gold can be found. If you get a good hit of gold dust in one spot, either mark it for later work, or go to the next stage immediately, digging out deeper down where the heavier bits would go. If you find heavier bits in the spot, you know there is likely to be even more there. Like all such endeavors, it will be a hit and miss thing, but the payoff could be pretty good if you remember where you got the gold dust from and go back to those spots to look for larger bits of gold.

I suffer from time to time with mine as well, and sometimes it feels like I'm being broke in half. That said, I wish I could be there with you on some of your trips, prospecting for gold. OK friend, I'm a locksmith among other things and I install Magnetic locks that are 12/24v. AC. Now I watched a video of a guy who stopped a gold coin from rolling using a AC magnet. You would need an Inverter for the field and water proof reinforced cabling but one of my Mag locks can hold depending on the model from 600 to 1300 lbs... Kind of makes you think don't it?

I put black sand in a cast iron pot with lid, and heat it in a wood fire. I use my gas blower to heat the pot cherry red. Then dump the hot sand into cold water to (crack) it. Then the gold pans out easily!!

Try putting your magnet in a plastic bag, Or make a plastic housing to put it in. Then when you drag it through the stream it will collect the black sand and you can just hold it over your bucket and pull the plastic cover off and the black sand will fall off into the bucket.

Chris D Osborne He isn’t actually catching gold with the magnet....he is sweeping up clumps of magnetic black sand that has gold flake mixed in, but he lost all the larger flakes and heavier pieces in the process.....hopefully he dredged those areas by hand also. While his method may not be the most efficient for harvesting gold, it is a hell of a good way to quickly prospect an area for dredging.

It is a great way of conventional thinking to make it so simple to find gold pockets, save alot of time and effort. This is why utube is so great. 👌👍🙌

Just saw your adventure with Vo-Gus Prospecting. Subscriber here now! Black sand (BS) with gold is gravitationally separated with sluicing/panning. You've presumed you'll pick up gold with the magnetic BS using a magnet. You won't for the magnet reason. But, friction by the BS will carry some gold with it to the magnet. I think what you've found is a very nice method of determining whether you should go back and pan and you should, because A. you got lots of BS. B. you pulled up some little bits of gold (through friction). You quickly showed that there's gold there, probably a lot more than you got with the BS. Nice method, I must try it. That's a fast easy method to 'prove' a creek.

Wow, i know my original comment wasnt the greatest, but i do have enough common sense to appreciate your idea, the purpose of your idea, the outcome was medicocre to say the least, BUT many of the other comments are from some truly ignorant people that dont deserve to see what you were doing because they simply lack a brain ..period! Regardless of .5 grams, ive spent more time recovering gold from electronics only to ruin the chemical process and risk being burned by aqua regia, ect. Ive always had the gold fever. Love the way ANY amount of gold looks like!!

ok not all black sand has gold but if you find both in an area there is a good chance to get the gold out of the black sands...my method is old and dangerous but the payoff can be worth it

If you put the magnet in a fairly thick plastic bag, you'll find it MUCH easier to get the black sand off the magnet.

I remember when I was in the state of North Carolina gold prospecting way back in the early 2000s there was a magnet I used for gold recovery and I remember dropping it a few times behind this big rock that I was digging and throwing it in a bucket and I took all the magnetite and brush it off into a mason jar and I took it home and actually panned it out little by little like you said in your video and actually found little specks of flour gold and Tiny flakes as well back in 2002 to 2003 and 2004. So I know the strategy works cuz I tried it long ago with a kind of mistake I made by leaving the heavy magnetite in my black pan I was going to dump it out later and forgot and it was stocked in the truck and later I panned it out just seeing because I thought I seen gold glittering underneath some of the heavy magnetite. I thought it was pyrite but was not sure until I panned it out and realized it was actually gold. So I was puzzled until I realized it was because it was stuck to the magnetite from the magnet and this is why and how it was collected with a small amount of gold with the magnetite.

in 1983 and 4 out of the Illinois river in California with a 4" dredge picked up black sands with Platinum in it as well as gold The illinois river is famous for its flake gold. there was a camp ground with a small creek out of the hill and i panned there and found over 3 oz of super fine gold and another person who saw me panned the rest of the water stream and said he found 5 oz. Went back in 2001 and all that area had been turned into a KOA camp ground no creek. out of the river for 3 months i had 200 lbs of Black sand i sold for 10 dollars a pound.

In the early 1970’s I saw several articles about people, “hippies” panning an ounce of gold a day from the streams, making $32-$36 a day! That is as much or more than could be made on the “take home” portion of a weekly paycheck. NOW, an ounce (today) $1482.00...I have a self regulating sluice box I intend to start using next year. GOLD is in Many locations worldwide. of course, if your local river is the Zambezi or the Congo this may make things a bit more difficult. hippo mothers don't care for Prospectors, the Crocs on the other hand think they're delicious!

On that note, why not process it chemically. Since iron reacts with cheap pool cleaning acid, just dump the entire bucket of black sand into the acid and call it good. What should be left at the bottom is gold, and maybe a few things that won't react with the acid...but I'm not sure what wouldn't. Suffice it to say, one of the only things that for sure won't react is the gold. I keep wonder about a way to isolate gold better...this method seems pretty promising as a start. I can't help but think that it is somewhat throwing the baby out with the bathwater to use the magnet a second time during refinement.

The gold that was picked up by the first magnet was mostly a by-catch to the black sand that was being picked up, as evidenced by the second cleanup which left the gold in the pan after using the second magnet.

you can make a miller table for about 100 dollars sometimes cheaper if you get a good deal on a small electric pump

On your Black Sands...don't dump them out...take em home, get a small rock tumbler from Harbor Freight...prefer to dry it first...then to the rock tumbler...for about 3 hours...its loud...no need to put any ball bearings, it is coarse enough as it is...now my part...put in about a 1/2 pound of Mercury...seal the rock tumbler...when it is done, you will need a mercury retort...this dangerous...know which way the wind is blowing...in your retort use about a 1/8th tsp of baking soda...using your retort...separate the gold from the mercury via heat and Nitric Acid...send me your black sands...you are missing gold...I have recovered 4oz in 150 lbs of Black Sands...in one weekend...best recovery tool is called a Gold Cube ($389.00)

glad you got to see gold. one of the methods i learned from others is, when separating black sands, is to do it wet and do a triple drop in the pan. you'll see the gold dropping out. i enjoyed!

If you want to get all the black sand off your fishing magnet easily... If you cover your magnet with a plastic bag (basic breath vacuum tight ) before doping it into the creek , then when you get your catch back to your bucket you have a simple and fast method to separate all the sand from the magnet by just pulling the bag away from the magnet all the sand will drop into your bucket. .. looks like you were having a time of it getting it off.

I'm guessing lifting and dropping the magnet among the rocks will quickly put holes in the plastic bag and you would have to constantly change the bags thus adding expense and time to the job.

Caleb Able the gold is not magnetic. but as it travels through the magnetic field of a vary strong, rare earth magnets energy field it will accually push not pull as it passes directly through. i didnt beileve it untill i tried for myself. its really neat. all non ferous metals respond this way to very strong magnetic fields. checkout gold dyninium. or induction. try drop a rare earth. magnet down through the center of a copper pipe if you really wana blow your mind. but the idea behind the gold sticking to the magnet is that the heavys with any luck would drag along Au and become trapped when the blacksand arcs or jumps to the magnet.

It *can* be magnetized or at least attracted. There is a book on something called a Master Magnet which is capable of attracting gold, copper and other metals. hi there Shane, I watched this because I thought it was going to about positioning magnets over a sluice box to slow the gold down so you don't miss the tiny specks. Good to discover a new way to magnet fish for gold though :), Maybe you don't know that magnets slow gold the same way magnets slow copper. It's well worth a try.

That black sand concentrates in the way it does demonstrates why gold concentrates are found where they are. Magnetite has a specific gravity of 5.20, the hematite 5.26, with gold at 19.32; at 3x heavier than the black sands, you'd think most of the gold would fall out. Still you collected .05 g so there's likely larger quantities where you dragged your magnet.

Klesh, an interesting alternative to straightforward panning. This method seems to work with very small particulate gold, and is relatively quick and trouble free. However, you might miss a huge gold nugget since gold is not magnetic. Another disadvantage is the magnet may not reach inside deeper pockets within the rock where gold may collect, simply as the magnet is too large to fit in tight spaces. So it's swings and roundabouts. Also, what happens if there is gold in the creek but no magnetite (magnetic oxide of iron)? No gold!

sugggest you make a metal box to put your magnet inside...then when you retrieve it place over your pail and pull magnet out to release the black sand....also attach some 1/2-1 inch metal wires to the metal box so they can get into deeper crevices than the flat surfaces can

I think there is a 'blue bowl' device for quickly separating gold from black sand. It uses water and gradually washes the sand away leaving the gold. If you got a few specks using a magnet, I think there was more left behind that was not picked up. I'm amazed you got any. Nice experiment... whatever works. Look up 'blue bowl', or ask your prospecting store.

I'd do it reversed and put the magnet at the bottom/underside of a bucket -shovel into it-and just pour the rest into another bucket -the magnetic would stay at the bottom of the bucket and the rest would go into your prosper to pan - pan. just rinse and repeat...
