One of our most recent recumbent trike builds is a speed demon on the pavement! We took this Catrike Expedition and added a UT Custom 1000 W hub motor with a dual battery set up. It's also set up with a head and tail light that are internally routed and operate off of the motor system. It's fast, it's comfortable and it's ready to ride.
See pics of this trike: www.utahtrikes.com/RECENTTRIK...

Amazing build!!! I am a spinal cord injury patient and this exact setup is what I really really want! I hope to get one set up to run about 30-35 top end, but the pedal assist is my main need. I can't wait to fly out to try out different models and get my build in thw works.

I’m officially sick of winter. Wanna get my ICE Sprint X motorized soon. It’s my impression you favor hub vs mid drive? 30 mph sounds like a blast. Actually 20 is. I’d like to see someone design heated grips. Seems doable. Videos make me want to ride. So does my trike every day when I pass by it in the garage. It says “Hey pops, let’s go!”
@UtahTrikesOnline
@UtahTrikesOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, feels like winter is just starting with all that snow we just got! Hub vs middrive really depends on the trike and the type of riding. With batteries on your trike though heated grips and maybe even a heated seat could be possible. :)

do you recommend putting grease in between the electrical connections.
@UtahTrikesOnline
@UtahTrikesOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Views are mixed on whether to use dielectric grease on connectors. We use mostly the XT90 connectors, which don't require it. If you will be pulling your connectors apart frequently it won't hurt and can make them easier to separate. The connections on the batteries can benefit from some dielectric grease and it can offer some additional weather protection. Again, feelings are mixed and results and opinions vary across ebike groups.

@UtahTrikesOnline
@UtahTrikesOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, although we forgot to mention it in the video. We actually make a custom pedal assist sensor for our motor that attaches to the idler. That way it allows us to use any crankset we want including Schlumpf or Pinion gearing.

I love watching your build/ customizing videos. Are there any advantages to the rear hub motor versus a motor mounted to replace the front crank such as Bosch or Bafang. Do you prefer one over the other. I would like to upgrade my 559 but having hard time deciding what system to go with. A video on the differences would be a great topic. Thanks
@metalman69201
@metalman69201 4 жыл бұрын
I have a fair amount of experience with these as I have built several difference electric vehicles, including the solar electric recumbent tandem trike that runs totally off of sunshine. Pictures are available if you would like to see it. I started out with bicycle wheels and tires but now I'm upgrading to motorcycle wheels and tires and upgrading from a 1000 watt rear hub motor to a Mxus 3K turbo Hub motor. From what I understand the mid Drive Motors that are integrated into your crank can produce a lot of torque, but don't have the regen feature to put electricity back into the battery like the Hub motors do. The Hub Motors are also more efficient because you don't have to turn that really long chain, sprockets, idlers, etc. My first conversion was a mountain bike and then I took a Honda ATC 185's and converted it to Electric ( video of it here on KZbin), and then I built the solar electric recumbent tandem trike and I have plans for a four-wheel drive electric pickup in my head now and I'm researching the various parts needed for it. Electric vehicles are addicting! Good luck!!
@UtahTrikesOnline
@UtahTrikesOnline 4 жыл бұрын
We are working in a video that will go over all the differences. The big advantages of our rear hub motor is that it allows you to keep all the front gearing and also offers reverse. Middrive motors are generally easier to install and removing the rear wheel is easier.

With the dual battery, is there individual monitoring of charge level, and usage control?
@UtahTrikesOnline
@UtahTrikesOnline 4 жыл бұрын
The batteries themselves have individual level meters. At anytime you can view the voltage on the display for whichever battery is on or the average of both. We recommend turning both batteries on and off at the same time trading them as a unit. This provides the maximum amperage to the motor with a lower draw to the individual batteries.

@UtahTrikesOnline
@UtahTrikesOnline 4 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of variables, such as how much you use the motor vs pedal, the terrain you ride on, how aggressively you accelerate, speed you ride, rider weight, etc. A safe estimate is typically 10-20 miles per battery with no pedaling. Using pedal assist modes you can get 4X that range.

At the time of this video in 2020 the price was around $5600 for the whole setup. Prices have changed a little in the past couple of years so if you were to get something similar it would be a little more now. We only have one location and that is in Springville, Utah, but we do ship all over America! You can order a trike over the phone or through our website Utahtrikes.com

I understand the aerodynamics of sitting low but in this case back pressure power into the legs is diminished because of it. it will eventually cause body sliding and back pain.

Lots of spokes on bikes makes it look lame and tame, something grandma would enjoy on a Sunday drive.
