By design, Catrikes are safe, stable and fun to ride. But, sometimes - SOMETIMES - internet hucksters turn one into what it's not supposed to be: unsafe and unstable.
Mel explains where this trike went off the rails - WAY OFF THE RAILS - and what RPDX must do to make it safe again.
An internet trike operation in Utah replaced the stock 20" wheels with 24" and 26" wheels - raising the seat position and center-of-gravity over 20% - without ANY corresponding increase in wheel track. Worse still, the use of flimsy aluminum extenders work against the inherent rigidity of Catrike's chain stays -creating a floppy, sloppy, dangerous rear wheel with little torsional stability.
RPDX's solution? Restoring the trike to Catrike Spec by re-installing 20" wheels and removing the aluminum extenders -so the rear wheel fit in the frame drop outs -as Catrike designed
What's the lesson here? It's ALWAYS the same: When you buy off the internet, you never know what you'll get -but, it's often not what you thought you were getting. The ONLY way to find the trike that's right for you is to TEST RIDE. There are fabulous brick and mortar trike stores throughout the country. When you're ready for a trike, go visit a REAL trike store!
