So much nostalgia from this song! I remember Macross Frontier wasn't just my entry into the Macross fandom, but also the first time I got seriously involved in a love triangle. I had watched other shows with the premise but it wasn't until the recap episode with Sheryl in the hospital and Alto and Ranka visiting her that I realized "Oh shi*! If Ranka loses I am genuinely going to be upset because I am invested in this romance". At least my ship flew in Delta, but Ranka and Alto always hold a special place in my heart and to an extent so does this song

@@Sephiroth144 Not as much as I thought it would. The TV show ending was worse because it left everything open ended so it was just frustrating. However, by the time the second movie came out I had already made peace that Sheryl was going to win. The first movie changed the relationship between Alto, Ranka, and Sheryl, as well as their roles, in comparison to the show that I saw the writing on the wall by the end of The False Songstress. Ranka got shoved to supporting main character and they kept expanding Sheryl and Alto's relationship in ways the series didn't so it was obvious. I only became more sure when the second movie's teasers came out and they showed Alto and Sheryl meeting as childhood friends which literally changed the order in which the girls met Alto. At that point any sliver of hope I had was gone. The first girl/guy who meets the MC in romance show's always winning is a very common cliche. By the time the movie came out I was just happy this whole mess was over. Some of the forums I used to go to had become quite toxic for me because of that stupid open ending, and I wish Kawamori had just stuck to his gut and named Sheryl the winner in the show. I know it was for marketing purposes, but I'm so glad they didn't pull that bs in Delta.

@@YingofDarkness There's always a love triangle in Macross, it's basically a requirement even, but at least with Delta it wasn't as screwy I guess. Hayate/Freyja/Mirage was much less stressful than Alto/Sheryl/Ranka and not as ambiguous. Still, who knows what's gonna happen in the new Delta movie; got a feeling this ain't settled yet lol..

@@FuelrIce I know there is always a love triangle in Macross, but after the Frontier movie and Delta I think the director is tired of them so he should stop. Both of them have an obvious winner from the beginning. This lack of a proper triangle is why I could only really care about the TV Sheryl/Alto/Ranka triangle. Triangle's and harems are only interesting (to me) when the chances are actually equal. Otherwise, multiple love interests can serve as a detriment to the characters and stories. It can make characters only interesting during those small romantic interactions which then feel hollow if they obviously have no chance. This is exactly what ended up happening to Mirage. There is nothing to settle in the new movie in Delta because Mirage never got a chance. She barely got a character at all in fact. The end of Delta ended with Freyja and Hayate saying they love each other. There is no way for Kawamori to pull a psyche there at the end without completing destroying Hayate's credibility, and making Mirage out to be pathetic (and he doesn't because I read spoilers for the movie already). Sorry about the essay, and I hope you don't take anything the wrong way.

@@YingofDarkness Of course not, Macross fans all tend to have pretty strong and often well-reasoned opinions ;) But given that the love triangle is a 39-year tradition that started with Minmay/Hikaru/Misa, I'm afraid I don't see it going away in the future. It's just the Macross Formula, itself a triangle: Music, Mecha and a love triangle involving one or more pilots and one or more idols/musicians (sometimes one of the characters fills multiple roles, as with Basara/Mylene/Gamlin in Macross 7: both Basara and Mylene are pilot/musicians). Heck, even in Macross Zero we had Shin and the Nome sisters (the younger of which was Sheryl's grandmother, if memory serves.) So even though it might be getting a bit old in some ways, I'd say the Macross love triangle is here to stay. Just isn't Macross without one: removing it would be as bad as removing music or mecha. Can't break the formula :-/
