What rigs did you use Steve , hook and lead size etc ?

Because I'd never fished the lake I was mainly trying out different things on day 1 just to get a bite. I noticed on the Deeper that there was some silt of a couple of inches at least so I started on a spinner rig size 6 korda curved with a white 15mm mainline popup. Then I also tried korda popup corn and 10mm Pineapple Wafters. I had all 3 rods on a method feeder to start. But i was getting a lot of nuisance fish giving me liners so switched to a lead system with 2oz lead. I didn't get a tap on any of that. So a couple of the local anglers were just fishing bottom baits with a few boilies in PVA mesh. So i switched up Rigs to just a basic knotless knot on 15lb IQ fluorocarbon size 6 curved and used 15mm CCmoore Pacific Tuna Boilies sold at the fishery. That seemed to work and got me my bites. That's what worked for me on that session. I think though on that lake like most small commercials it's all be about location. That day the fish all seemed to be held up around peg 4-5. I picked both my fish up right on the boundary with peg 5. My left hand rod near the island did nothing and the lads on 7-8 hadn't had any luck while i was there. Hope this helps.

Yea thanks I’ll know not to bother with method feeders and go straight in with the lead systems, no weed I believe?

@@colinhalligan8527 There was some very small clumps of dead weed right at the bottom of some of the deeper drop offs. Other than that it was a couple of inches of silt. that was on my side of the lake at swim 6 anyway. I didn't survey the far side around swim 2 and 3 which i believe from talking to a guy down there can get weedy.

Great videos Steve.Loch Mahon is a smashing spot,I go there a lot with my son and do the overnight.Even though we stick to the match lake we still catch some nice sized fish on standard enough bait & rigs.

Thanks for commenting Gar. It’s a great spot and I’ll definitely be back down there. The match lake looked very interesting as well. Maybe next time I might get to wet a line in there on a float rod as I love to catch them that way on a bit of corn or luncheon meat. Nothing better than watching a waggler slide away.

You should try oaklands fishery in new ross . Good days fishing there steve

It looks a nice venue alright but just a bit too far for me for a day ticket only venue. It’s 2 hours travelling time for me to oaklands. There are a couple of venues offering similar day tickets within an hour from me so I tend to head there for day sessions. Loch Mahon was great because I could bivvy up for the 48hrs so it was worth the trip.

You can give the owner Tom a call on (087) 276 5664 and book in with him. There is a list of rules on their website for each of lakes. But Tom will sort you out with anything you need to know. Tight lines 🎣
