Karl is a really friendly guy. I attended a Nile concert, and when the other members were gone offstage Karl stayed like 10 minutes on stage, leaning forward to the crowd, shaking hands and letting everyone touch his Dean ML headstock. Besides, this is filmed in The Netherlands. Karl may be a big guy, but Dutch men measure 6"4 on average. And people from Rotterdam are crazy agressive. Well, at least at soccer riots xD

I have stood by the following statement for a while now. Kingsland is a fucking beast. Love is playing, his vocals, his writing. Even though he is amazing and really fits the band, Dallas was the 100% fit for the band while Brian is a 90% fit. I'm happy about the band and where they're going (Scott Eames is killing it as a tour replacement), but I think that Nile lost a minute aspect of their sound when Dallas left without losing their credibility and power.

Chris Lollis has been a permanent bassist for the band between 2007 and 2012. Unfortunately, when they wanted to start writing material for the new album At the Gate of Sethu, Chris was absent due to personal trouble. The band has since replaced Chris with Todd Ellis, who is now a permanent member.

Thanks! I've used a Canon EOS 550D / Rebel T2i to shoot the video and a Zoom H1 Handy Recorder for the audio. If I had to get a new camera I would consider one with a swivel screen. Also, I would replace the audio recorder with one that can handle the brutal loudness of concerts like these without clipping like crazy.

@DeathinHD It's a Zoom H1, which is a combination of a recorder and a mic. The Rode VideoMic can actually be plugged into the H1. The VideoMic has a narrow field which is great for attaching to a boom pole to record a dialog, but less so for capturing bands. The H1 sits somewhere in between omni-directional mics that record the complete surroundings and the shotgun mics that only record what you aim at. Straight from the desk takes away the technical challenge, but tests your people skills.

I've used the Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens in manual focus mode, at the widest aperture. The rapid zooms were a bit tricky. Because I was holding the camera with my right hand, I only had my left hand available to turn both the zoom ring and the focus ring simultaneously. It's quite hard to focus correctly with a shallow depth of field on the LCD screen, while at the same time paying attention to what happens on stage and most importantly, staying on both feet in a mosh pit!
@Utreife
@Utreife 12 жыл бұрын
The Rebel T2i did not have a stereo mic. That's why to record loud music I used a portable recording device Zoom H1. The Tascam DR-05 can even record up to 125dB. However, newer cameras have stereo mics and better sound quality. But really, you should do some research. Aside from DSLRs there are a lot of options these days which may better suit your needs. Camcorders, mirrorless cameras, and indeed even camera phones have come a long way.

You pointed out their best sounding riffs ...I see ... I wont argue or anything you are spot on with your music... I listen to music from a guitarist perspective I am also a songwriter myself and do my own drumming these days lol but yes I was actually into Nile for a short period , I digged the Egyptian themes and the general power of the music ...this was about a month but the more I listened in depth behind all the drums and distortion I just got bored...

@Utreife Awesome! I figure the Rode stereo mic? Any idea how the Rode Videomic would of done in these conditions? I mean ideal scenario would be a feed from the desk but I don't know if thats a realistic option.

A couple of years ago I saw Karl kick a drunk guy off the stage, here, at the very same venue. Not undeservedly I'd say. Not sure if it's related, but if you watch the video closely you may notice a bodyguard sitting in the corner. At the other Nile gigs I attended Karl seemed to be very friendly.

$1500 for my kit? No way. I bought it as an early adopter in 2010 at around $1000. The successor Canon 650D (Rebel T4i) with the 18-55mm lens is about $650 right now. But I'd probably get a Nikon nowadays.

Thanks :) Funny you should mention it, I happen to have shot a video with the 50mm 1.8: Zonaria - Rendered In Vain, /watch?v=FnPeXqvPRLM. After I got home from the concert I checked their official video and had a laught at the similarities, you know, the frantic shaky cam and extreme close-ups. Then again, which metal video isn't like that ;)

64 GB isn't that much anymore these days. At 3 minutes per GB, a 64 GB card can hold about 3 hours of video. If you're at a festival it wouldn't be overkill to have several of those cards. And a lot of batteries, too.
@Utreife
@Utreife 12 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I spent too much space on too small memory cards recording the other bands that day. I messed up and didn't get Black Seeds of Vengeance completely. I still regret it and since then I carry at least a huge 64 GB card with me...
