'Sestina', which originally began life as a setting of Elizabeth Bishop's eponymous poem, is a miniature for three instruments (melody + two other instruments) composed on 29th January 2020 (the anniversary of Milton Babbitt's passing). The work, which directly follows pieces like Refrain I (for piano and electronics) and The Almanac of Time (for voice and instrumental groups) is an exploration of serial composition within a framework of controlled chance.
The piece was lightly revised on 14th January 2024 and is dedicated to the memory of Milton Babbitt.
