I must say this is so relieving for me, I have already ordered my UV 18 pro max and after watching this video I am absolutely excited to get it and use it on the 1.25m. UV 17 pro GPS is good but I think this test done by you should open some eyes so people know what to go for, many thanks Big Will

Thank you this is a very intresting video. I received my 18 Pro Max a week ago and feel better about it now. Seems like a neat radio. Most budget radios'll only do 3.8w UHF and 4.8w VHF. The air band reception is a little unclear, not sure if its the nature of the air band or if it is the 18 Pro Max. The speaker is loud to, however i notice most incoming transmissions are very soft due to people not caring about using the microphone gain.

My Baofeng UV-17 Pro puts out a little over 6 watts on 220 (1.25m). It's just a Pro (no GPS) with pre-release firmware I got off Aliexpress. You have to change radio settings using something like Chirp on some earlier Baofengs to get them to work on 220. I wonder if that's the case with your units?

@@N2EWSRadio ...unfortunately firmware cannot be changed by chirp which is just software for programming the frequencies on the radio. Baofeng themselves upgraded the firmware to version 1.03 which fixed the problem with no transmit on 1.25 meters. 👍😎

@@bigwill4423 I don't mean firmware. There's a "settings" tab in Chirp when I use it to program the BF-F8HP. Under "Other settings", I can change "VHF Upper Limit" to 226. Now I can receive and transmit on 220. It's not wise to do so, since that particular radio signal is very dirty on 220, but I was just wondering if there's a similar setting for your radios. I can't test it here, since I don't have one.

@@N2EWSRadio ...yes, you can "expand" the frequency limit in chirp but if the radio isn't designed to go there then you will not only get a bad signal but will also produce "spurious emissions" because the radio wasn't designed to transmit there. The 1.25 meter fault in the uv-17 pro GPS could only be rectified by altering the firmware which they did successfully in version 1.03 onwards! 👍😎

Both my UV-17 Pro GPS radios are running v 1.27 firmware and the UV-18 Pro Max is running v 1.03 firmware. Hardware is v1.30 on all versions. Hope this helps.

@bigwill4423 thanks BIG will!!! Do you know if anyone have managed to update/change firmware on baofeng radios and what is the procedure? My Uv 17Pro max is running FIRMWARE VO.06 and HARDWARE V01 and i am discovering running bugs that are annoying

@@sekibulja-fu3bv unfortunately it is not possible to update the firmware on Baofeng analogue radios...probably part of the reason they are so cheap. ☹️

@@aerotacto yes indeed. The ones with the latest firmware (v 1.03...yes that is the latest despite the number) have has the tx in 1.25 meters fixed. Just make sure you can get a v1.03 firmware version if you intend to tx on 1.25 meters on the 17 pro GPS. 👍

I bought my uv 17 pro gps a few weeks ago. Nice full-featured radio but the AM air receive is terrible. Is anyone else having the same issue?

@@rts3262 yes, it's a known issue with all Baofengs and indeed many other radios which use "slope detection" to decode an AM signal. It is what it is unfortunately. ☹️
