The liquid sunscreen should always be the first base layer in the morning. Sprays and powder are only advised for use as reapplication every 2 hours if you're just staying indoors all day. UVA is still able to penetrate glass windows. But if you're outdoors, definitely reapply using whatever liquid base you used every 2 hours and more often if you're in water or sweating a lot. Use waterproof preferably as well.
@anaghabalagopal

You have to apply sunscreen even when you're indoors?
@Dr__Feelgood
@Dr__Feelgood Жыл бұрын
@@anaghabalagopal Well, again, the modern UV-blocking car/home window glasses do not have much ability to block the UVA rays, which cause the sun's skin aging effects (& also some cancers but to a much lesser degree than the UVB kind). UVB generally leads to the dangerous sunburning effects & cancer on the skin. The "99% UV protection" they usually claim for the glass used in windows & sunglasses refer mainly to UVB. But it also depends on how much sunight is penetrating the room you're staying in when indoors & of course the weather outside as well, so check your UV index for the day. If it's a cloudy or rainy day with low UV index & you're staying indoors the whole day, you may not need to apply SPF at all. I'd personally still apply a coat of at least SPF 30 at the start of any kind of day, though, out of habit & cuz I'm prone to hyperpigmentation due to being a brown-skinned & acne-prone person, but I wouldn't reapply any more SPF except if I need to run errands, for example, for a short period of time later that day. So just use common sense to modify the general rules that should be most appropriate for the whole time you're outdoors. If you have family or personal history of skin cancer for instance, you would then need to be more mindful of the rules than if you didn't have that particular factor in your medical history. Remember that SPF can only protect you as long as you have adequate amounts of an effective sunscreen with high SPF on your skin. That means that it diminishes over time during the day (i.e. the higher the SPF & PA + on the label, the longer they can stay stable on your skin) due to their spontaneous degradation caused by their very function of blocking the UV rays, which directly diminish the efficacy of the SPF chemicals as they work, as well as from our natural release of sweats & oils throughout the day on top of the kind of weather & activity you're doing that day. So if you're out there swimming or playing sports, you'd have to use water-resistant SPF while also needing to reapply more often (or every after you need to wipe any area off with a towel) than the recommended intervals of 2 hours when out in the sun while doing just regular daily activities that don't disrupt your usual layer of SPF application . And then apply the opposite modifications for the reverse situation.

@@tvgr8218 Yeah I’m pretty sure that’s why she listed the strength of its SPF because the sunscreens are indeed regulated. Some might have chemicals you don’t prefer, but that would take your own research. From Coppertone to SunBum, they both work the same exact way depending on the level of SPF. The only difference would be the chemicals used as fillers, fragrance, etc. For example, I like the SunBum sunscreens & it’s smell…however, it irritates my skin (scented fragrance) & once it got in my eyes & pretty much made the entire pool day painful for my eyes. They were protected 😅but irritated once it got in my eyes & wouldn’t come out. Coppertone is much easier for that, if it gets in your eyes you can rinse & out and a few minutes later it won’t hurt as badly. That’s just a small example of the differences. The SPF protection is near identical. I’ve seen brand comparisons before on sunscreens & the top tier brands all check the boxes 👌 it is good to compare what your skin prefers though. Some people get very dry skin after using Coppertone lotions, so they use the spray only. Just different examples of what your skin likes, on top of the most useful. That’s why many people use the spray over lotion, well, & sticky hands 😅

Just a random cat No, it would. Sunscreen doesn’t “wear off” like a glowstick, which is why you don’t need an entirely new bottle of sunscreen every time. The reason sunscreen becomes ineffective is because as time goes on your sweat and anything else that touches your skin washes it off. Eventually it washes too much off for it to be helpful anymore.

Uma Barriga Semi-incorrect. So, whatever you put on your skin, some of it does in fact get absorbed, how much depends on what it is. However it won’t slowly absorb over time, it will be absorbed pretty much right as you put it on and start rubbing it in the skin is meant to protect from outside hazards and it does a pretty good job of doing that so getting things passed it is not easy. Basically, sunscreen does not get absorbed into your bloodstream (besides like 4% which will be filtered out through your liver) and certainly doesn’t over time

@@medinbeqiri7539 if you've had above average sun exposure and you have light skin, it's possible that your skin has lost some more elasticity and shows more wrinkles than it otherwise might have. It also comes down to genetics, though. But most people have signs of aging at 30 - if you have photoaged noticeably more than other people your age (like maybe you've been hitting the tanning beds since you were 15), you will know. This isn't necessarily true either. Yes, physical filters do refelct _some_ UV radiation, but they mostly work by absorbing UV radiation, just like an organic chemical filter would. It’s a big misconception that physical filters, Zinc and Titanium Dioxide, reflect 100% of UV radiation like an impenetrable shield; That simply is not true. They reflect only around ~5-10% of UV while the rest of the UV is absorbed and converted, much like how organic filters work. Again, because people are not reading my comment correctly, I am not saying mineral filters do not reflect at all - I am saying that they *_mostly_* absorb UV, _in addition_ to scattering some UV. And before anyone tries to call me out, yes I am a licensed skincare professional.

you still get UVA exposure even if you stay inside assuming you have windows and natural lighting. Widow glass only filters UVB - the heat rays. UVA rays are the ones that give off light. So as long as you can see where you're going w/o the need of a flashlight you are in fact exposed to UVA rays. Even indoors.

I'll try to answer a few of your points. I'm not an expert but I've been wearing sunscreen since before it became popular and I have done a TON of research and also have a good relationship with my dermatologist. I've been wearing so many different sunscreens over the last 25 years. It's actually really nice to see so many options now! Anyway, to get to the point, believe that SPF 30 blocks 95% of UV rays and SPF 50 blocks 97%. SPF 15, blocks I think 93%. Anything over SPF 50 is just gimmicky and wasting your money. Wayne Goss has a video on using makeup with SPF, you would literally have to coat your face like a clown to get adequate coverage. Please don't rely on makeup for your protection. If a moisturizer has SPF in it, I'd look for the Skin Cancer Society seal of approval before using it (just to be safe)! I don't know anything about "no rub" but I'm definitely going to look into it! I have used the spray sunscreens and while I don't know how effective they are, they all seem to be really sticky. The opacity of a product wouldn't necessarily change depending on the SPF rating but rather if the product is chemical or physical. Usually physical/mineral sunscreens leave a white cast on the skin and anything it touches. I have ruined a few items of clothes and even my car interior from using physical sunscreens. :-( And for your last one, it depends on which type of protection you use. Physical sunscreens block the UV rays and can last up to 4 hours of in and out sun exposure or 3 hours of continuous sun exposure. Chemical sunscreens absorb the UV rays and after about 2 hours of continuous sun exposure they get "full" and you have to reapply. I really hope this helps! and yes, wearing sunscreen on a consistent basis really DOES keep you looking young! I'm in my late 30s and people still think I look like I'm between 21-25! No wrinkles!

People constantly ask me what I do to have such young looking skin. They never like my answer but it’s true. I have worn sunscreen pretty much every day of my life starting as a teenager. I also lived in a climate with long winters and was rarely “tanning” at a beach. I think people want me to say some quick fix I did or that I use some magic serum that took away my aging but that just doesn’t exist. The best defense of wrinkles is really preventing them in the first place. However, now that I am older and starting to see some fine lines, I started using retinol but I honestly see little difference. For all the young people out there, wear sunscreen every day, even if it’s cloudy or winter. You’ll thank me when you’re in your forties with little to no fine lines or wrinkles.

@vera-vf4we
@vera-vf4we 5 жыл бұрын
Difference is the amount of UV rays that it blocks, though the number on the bottle doesn't directly coincide with the percentage of blockage. SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays and SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays. So there's, like, only a couple percentage differences between them all, which is important to note since SPF levels are often priced higher the higher they are.

The makeup itself can be problematic, but it shouldn't mess up your sunscreen application. As long as you let it dry down before putting on makeup then you're good. Problem with using makeup over sunscreen is that you need to reapply sunscreen, even if it doesn't contain avobenzone. So I'd opt for a tinted sunscreen instead of foundation as you can easily reapply it. Hope I answered you question without it being confusing :]

Neutrogena Sheer Liquid Daily Sunscreen is formulated to be applied under makeup. It works wonderfully. I apply it (normally 2-3 thin layers, use SPF 70), let it set, put a bit of mattifier primer over it to set it more, then apply a bit of foundation powder. Works great for me.
@morganmiller6373
@morganmiller6373 5 жыл бұрын
I like to put on a layer of sunscreen by itself on my bare skin, slightly thinner then how much you’re supposed to use. Let it dry, then I put in my hand a proper amount of sunscreen and a small bit of foundation to tint it. Mix it in my hands and put it on like moisturizer, and then use extra foundation as a concealer if I really need to. I’ve tried applying makeup on top of sunscreen with both my fingers and sponges (I avoid brushed because I feel that the movements you have to make turn your layer uneven and I feel the bristles poke into your makeup and remove the sunscreen) and I’ve also tried just mixing the sunscreen and makeup but I knew I was diluting my sunscreen. So I find that this one gives me the best protection without feeling like I’m taking off my sunscreen with makeup sponges and brushes and things and I keep a layer underneath to compensate for diluting my spf 🙂

+Mackenzie Herrera physical sunscreens are very effective, but they should contain both titanium dioxide and zinc oxide and be broad spectrum/three pluses or more (+++)

Yes, zinc oxide is one of the most effective ingredients. It's very whitening which is why people dislike it. There is nano-form but that is not environment friendly nor as protective as the real thing.

I'm 33, and just now getting around to daily sunscreen application. Should've been doing this my whole life, but better late than never. I LOVE keeping a stick in my bag for reapplying. So happy to know it's working well because I was a bit worried it wouldn't have as good a coverage as lotion.

I love this!!! Thank you! Now I wish you'd show us how the protection looks AFTER 2 hours. We were supposed to reapply every two hours and gahhhhh I rarely do it especially after putting on make up! If only we know how it looks after 2 hours (if the protection is still adequate enough for us not to reapply)

You *should* reapply every two hours but the reality is incredibly nuanced. It is absolutely essential to reapply that often if you're outside in direct sun but if you're mostly indoors I wouldn't worry about it that much. I usually apply before leaving the house and then reapply midday. I wear UPF clothing in my car and while hiking. UPF clothing and staying out of the sun are very important sun protections steps that can help you determine whether or not you need to reapply. You can also check the UV index for the day and make decisions based on that. If I'm outdoors and/or sweating, I will reapply more often than two hours, especially if during peak sun hours (10am-4pm). But you will still have some sun protection after two hours. It will heavily depend on the sunscreen, your activity, if you've been touching the area, and how well the sunscreen was applied. Think of sunscreen as a layer that needs time to dry and set, and will physically wear off and move around over time. Like makeup getting patchy over the day-- you still have makeup on, it's just not as consistent. Same as sunscreen.

Apparently not very good either. I've read reviews on the Colorscience powder sunscreen and people haven't been impressed by it, especially one said she used a lot of it and still got sun burn and hyperpigmentation, but when she switched to a sunscreen lotion it didn't happen

Personally, I use it just when I already had my sunscreen, my bb cream (with SPF) and I'm like indoors and need to reapply... I have the A'PIEU powder sunscreen and when I'm applying, it's very easy to see if it's really on my skin or not bc it's a dark beige color (it fades after and my makeup keeps nice as hell but anyways) so...
