Not sure I would use CAD software for game props.. unless you plan on using UE5 / Nanite exclusively?

This video is great! I've been trying to master the unwrap feature in keyshot with no sucess at all. In the end I always plan my renders in a way that mapping errors are no longer visible, and when that is not possible pull a sneaky photoshop edit in the final image. You are definitely right, you can spend long hours for a rather disatisfying result. I hope the keyshot team can further develop this tool. Thank you for all the videos, keep on these amazing tutorials.

Thanks Will! I've been looking for this kind of video for so long!! My main struggle is mapping tile pictures of fabric to double curved surfaces in keyshot to make natural looking headphone or speaker. But most of the time my uv unwrap techniques are mostly based on luck and no "behind the scenes" knowledge. This was very insight full :D

@@WillGibbons Very Cool. This is a well put together lecture and I'm impressed with the level of detail and obvious work it must take to compile this info. One question is about saving out STL's from Nurbs models. I use SW, Rhino and Alias and in most cases there are settings to adjust the number of triangles created on the meshes exported. But nothing really called tessellation like you mentioned. I tested the SW settings on a simple revolve and the triangles look jacked up no matter how many I set. I'm obviously being lazy and trying to avoid adding Blender in the cad mix..

Thank you for sharing your knowledge sit 🙏 I have another solution if anyone wanna try. Some cad softwares provide powerful reverse engineering tools like Ansys spaceclaim or power surfacing for solidworks. What I do is I save my cad data that generates the poor topology with stretches as an STL file, then I use the built in reverse engineering tools to shrinkwrap or quad wrap another surface on top of them that I can controle. Looks like a lot of work but it gives a cleaner and more uniform polygonal model that doesn't mess up the textures

This video is a mix blessing, on one hand now I understand why animators use polygon base software and why they look so good and on the other hand I know that I'll encounter poor topology, in all my professional career as an industrial designer. Thanks for showing me the truth, it hurts, but was necessary...
@WillGibbons4 жыл бұрын
Haha, I would encourage you to just acknowledge that there are shortcomings, but also seek solutions. Technology is constantly improving and who knows... maybe there will be some big updates that will eventually make this more seamless (no pun intended). Most are finding it necessary to pick up another software for visualization and still use CAD for times when it makes most sense.

Thanks will! I've been waiting for a series like this for awhile now. Really helpful to hear about which nurbs modeling features (like loft) create the cleanest UV's. Do you have any other tips for that?
@WillGibbons4 жыл бұрын
Hey, not specifically. I tried making some tutorial on that in the past but in my exploration, I just found that there were too many variables and it was a bit too unpredictable for me to come to any concrete solutions. It also varies by software. I know Magnus Skogsfjord has a video about 'creating welds in KeyShot' and in his video he shows how he can control the UVs in NX. That said, not many people have access to that tool.

hey! really informative and well organized! but what about retopology? I have a very complex cad model and as I need to texture it. the more I research this, the more I come to the conclusion that I need to model it again in blender with a topology that makes it easier to unwrap it!
@WillGibbons Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, that is sometimes the case. You can try first in KeyShot to do a re-tessellate. That's only goning to be an option if you imported NURBs with your CAD data. That's KeyShot's attempt at re-drawing the triangles a bit. Of course it can be hit or miss with limited control.

I started my acquaintance with the 3D industry starting with KeyShot, it is very simple for beginners, but it has many drawbacks and I still don’t understand why professionals don’t immediately advise you to leave KeyShot and immediately start learning with Blender?
@WillGibbons2 жыл бұрын
I used to teach KeyShot at large companies who had design team. Here's what I found or was told. 1) Many industrial designers who use KeyShot don't have much time to dedicate to rendering. Because KeyShot is simple, they can predictably create renderings that meet their needs. When a software is simple, it's often easier to troubleshoot when facing issues. Blender is quite vast by comparison and many have told me they were confused or intimidated by the UI. 2) 99% of the teams I trained did not work in a polygonal modeling program. They used CAD such as Solidworks, Rhino, CATIA, OnShape, Alias, Fusion 360, CREO... all NURBs based packages. Getting CAD data with good topology into Blender (or any poly modeler) is an issue/challenge. Not saying it's impossible, but it takes time and a deeper understanding of how to do so. So, in my experience, people use KeyShot because with their limited time and capabilities, it delivers what's needed at the end of the day despite some of its limitations. If you're going to be a render artist or animator... of course, there's other programs that make more sense. What do you think?
@sucre.design2 жыл бұрын
@@WillGibbons I completely agree with you, KeyShot is very fast in rendering, but I often encounter bad topology that cannot be changed in KeyShot and I understand that it would be better to spend time and study Blender, what to do in a complex way in one program, it turns out that for a long time I studied only KeyShot and every time as I learn, I encounter a lot of problems that cannot be fully done in KeyShot. Perhaps you can tell me, I also have a problem in KeyShot, for example, I create a ground surface, add one grunge texture for cracks, change its scale, then add any other texture, also change its scale and it turns out that when the scale of the second texture changed the scale is the same as the first one. I return to the first texture, return the parameters that I like to it, and then I see that the parameters of the second texture have changed. How to use two or more textures so that they are not linked to each other when changing the scale parameters?

I had hard time to solve uv map problem for CAD data but i found a great software called moi3d. That program remeshes your model. Later you have to fix some topology but it worked perfectly fine for me.
@WillGibbons4 жыл бұрын
MOI is for sure a great tool. I don't own it, but am well-aware plenty of people use it as an intermediary tool.
@richcoburn65554 жыл бұрын
Instant meshes is also a free intermediary step that I have used to simplify the mesh making it much easier to use the Keyshot UV mapping tool. It's not perfect but is faster than remodeling in blender etc in many cases.
@Armagancn4 жыл бұрын
@@richcoburn6555 in fusion360 when u want to export your cad model as fbx or obj you have to send it cloud first then cloud remesh it then send you its take 5-20 minutes based on how complex your model (sometime its crashes) but if you use MOI you can export your model in a minute. This is why i use Moi as export option...
