Agree with the cover letter comment. I make it to next steps without writing one. At first, I did think "what if I don't stand out and lose my chance?" But the more I thought about the back-end where they'll be reading through HUNDREDS of applications and concluded...nah I wouldn't enjoy that so I won't put them through that BS hell LOL. But the next challenge is now making sure your portfolio is top notch....after hearing your comment about how some hiring managers would just select the first person off the shortlist if they're good enough and not bother to make it down the list 😭

Haha the standout part is going to be your portfolio. With hundreds of portfolios, making yours stand up there is the key. Cover letter? Meh. But yeah, apply early and make sure your portfolio is sharp then you have a much better shot.

@@Justeen15 DEFINITELY!! The ‘Cover Letter’ video is so impressive and really opened up my eyes!! Btw I’m currently in a career transition stage, do you have any recommendations for people like me out there? I know a lot of people who’s considering it/ stepping into the field.

@@fionasiu8268 Haha the cover letter is a fun one for sure. Welcome to UX! We definitely need more designers to advocate for users. Are you teaching yourself? Bootcamp? Go to school for it? Generally speaking, you can learn everything on your own. The tricky part if where to get what information, as you might know know what to look for and likely to end up not having a systematic way of learning. I went to school for industrial design and media design, which are related to UX, but not completely UX UX, so I would say I learn 50% of it myself. I have made 2 videos on that, you can check them out to see what classes I had: kzbin.info/aero/PLNgWNg4wjoKtR0JG8cfMAHQ5LIt2MEf5z I also made a video on what core concepts UX designers need to know, so you can aim for those articles/books/classes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnWagXeugN6Fj6s

@@Justeen15 I started taking Google UX courses from Coursera back in Nov 2021, completed my very first academic project, and currently working on an e-commerce project for a start-up. I am a new grad from a business school in NYC majored in Finance. YES, I agree on the part that people are able to learn UX on their own and I also think stepping out to collab with aspiring ux designers will help accelerate the process of self-learning. I hope I'm able to use design to improve lives and experiences, big or small. Thanks again for all the info, I'll continue to support your channel and share this useful and amazing content with fellow UX designers!

 @Fiona Siu That's cool. I know a few viewers of mine also took the Google UX course. Seems pretty popular. Sounds like you have got the finance expertise! Awesome, I am pretty much the opposite. I went to school for design and then learned about finance on my own, which led to me design-driven finance videos haha. Design is def the way to improve everyday life, for sure. Thanks for supporting! Let me know if you have further design related, or even design x finance related topics you want to see in future videos :) Cheers!

Another great video as always! Not sure if you mentioned this in another video, but in my experience, applying through a referral helps significantly. I cold messaged a lot of college alumni that work in the company I'm applying for, and those that graduated within the last 1-4 years were the most responsive (that being said, only ~20% actually responded). If they don't respond on LinkedIn, I also cold-emailed their alumni college email (really just tried different combinations of their name). For me, contacting recruiters was not as helpful as referrals because there is a surplus of talent in the junior market for internships/entry roles. Let me know if this is true for others as well!

Oooo another good point you scored right there. I briefly touched upon referral in some of my internship videos, but no I have not dived into it yet. This video is only covering those who applied online through company website with modern hiring software like greenhouse or maybe workday (I don't like workday tho). Referral is a good tip for new grads or interns. The rest of the process should still be relatively the same though. :)

Hi, Miranda. Thank you for sharing your experience. It's really helpful. I have a question about a referral. Is it possible to ask for a referral to a person who works in a different field in the company? For example, can I ask for a referral to a friend who works in a marketing department if I see a relevant UX designer job posting from the company?

Hiii Justeeeeeeeeeeennn!! Great video insights! When hiring, what candidates stand out and finally get hired? what will you say the most important traits are for a UX candidate? thanks!
@Justeen15
@Justeen15 Жыл бұрын
Hi Zeliaaaaaaaa!! Thank for the comment! - When I hired, the quality of the portfolio is always the first thing to look at and that filters out >70% of the people I think. - Then inviting candidates to do interviews it would be how well they present in the presentation and how well they answer our questions 😅 it's not like "confidence" is the key trait, because if you know your answer, you will automatically appear "confident" articulating your responses. If you don't know it, I can spot it and the confident facade won't hold. - I have a video lining up on "standing out" in an interview later on so stay tuned! - Meanwhile, kzbin.info/aero/PLNgWNg4wjoKsKaYC4lxztS-GBaVirFc1c this playlists cover a lot of stuff you need to know, so I think "knowing your stuff and getting those right" is more valuable than knowing the "important traits". Traits are more advanced stuff I would say. Does that help?
