That farmall 140 would have come from the factory as positive ground. Good video Bill, glad to see familiar faces
@justinstearns9723 Жыл бұрын
If it came from the factory 12 volt it would’ve been negative ground. The older ones were 6 volt positive ground but they switched over to 12 volt around 1964. And that one looks like a 70s model.

Take the inspection cover off on the bell housing and use a bar to hit the disk with the clutch disengaged . My C Allis use to stick the disk over each winter.

Strangely enough, especially considering the "well used" condition of this tractor, it had never done this before. But if it does, I'll keep that in mind.

I wish I could count on one hand the number of times I probably should have been badly hurt or worse doing something I shouldn't have done in all the years I've been working on cars and tractors, pulling stuff around the yard, etc, it's a good thing I've gotten older in my very early 50's and slowed way down.

I still regularly use the 1946 Farmall H my grandpa bought new. And most of us who grew up on farms have probably "done that" numerous times like standing on the draw bar holding on to the seat while grandpa drove the tractor down the road.. lol

My AC was notorious for its clutch rusting to the flywheel after around a month of not being used. Id just start it in first and slam on the brakes a few times and it was good to go. Northern Indiana humidity wreaks havoc on metal surfaces..i know its bad in your part of Illinois as well..i wont say where. Lol

The electric starter won't turn the engine over with any gear selected. (Maybe one needs a twelve volt conversion for that.)

At our family farm we have a Ford model 4 tractor whose clutch got stuck once after sitting dormant for a year or two. Ever since then, for some reason it’s always very hesitant to crank. Grandad can usually get it running in ten minutes, but once my cousin and I ran the battery all the way down trying to get it started.
@travis47985 жыл бұрын
Positive ground 12 volt systems were the norm back in the day for tractors. A few changes to the electrical system fixes that. But the most interesting thing I've found with it, no corrosion on the battery terminals even after years of having the same battery in it.
@uxwbill5 жыл бұрын
There is only one tractor here left with a positive ground 12 volt system. I have thought about converting the six volt tractors to negative ground, but haven't felt sufficiently motivated.

Greetings uxwbill. Nice change away from the old dusty old computers Bill. Reminded me of when were living on a lifestyle block and I had a old Ford 5000 tractor. Tough old thing and must have done a heap of hard work in it's time. However the tractor would always managed to give me a few several scary moments whenever I needed to use it for mowing. We had a few steep paddocks on the farm and having no fully functioning brakes would make for some interesting moments, just hoping you would slow down enough to do a sharp turn to the left at the bottom of the paddock because the other option was straight ahead and through the fence. But anyway I manage to survive so I guess it wasn't my time to go and so I am typing on the keyboard now. I noticed was it your brother who was spraying around the cap of the air cleaner when attempting to start your tractor. I wonder if taking the top off the air cleaner would provide a more direct stream to fire up the tractor. I use to take the top off air cleaner off our old tractor and spray the either down the pipe directly. That done the trick because tractor would fire up with a massive cloud of diesel smoke. After that the tractor would be good to go all day.

if you get b out again and in open space hook a chain from hitch to loader on john deere then start b in gear and pull the deere around holding clutch down on b and applying brake on deere it with probably free up clutch on b. If b has brakes you could possibly free it up without the deere.
@uxwbill3 жыл бұрын
We got the clutch freed up a little later that day. The starter motor had enough power to spin the engine with the PTO/mower deck engaged. Eventually, with the engine running, the clutch broke free.

You have now! (It's a bad idea even to do so gingerly, as I did. It takes a lot less effort than one might expect to crack a plate or break the connection between a terminal and the plates. But sometimes, when you're far away from everything and no other option presents itself...)

Mastermilo82 recently did a video showing how to drive without a clutch, just have to start 'er up in first gear and you'll be off to the races, or at least holding up the races with it... :D
@uxwbill5 жыл бұрын
The electric starter won't spin things over fast enough with the transmission in gear. Fortunately, it will with the mowing deck engaged, and that was enough to break it loose. Pulling it around with a truck, with the tractor's ignition system disabled and the transmission in gear, might also have done the trick.

That is a two person video. One drives the truck, the other pops the clutch on the tractor and waits and waits and waits and waits for it to finally fire off. It wouldn't be very exciting. Then, if you go into road gear, it's likely that the shifting forks will get stuck.
