Wow, an electric starter. Our '39 had a crank. Also, the glass sediment bowl had to be emptied often.

Very cool looking tractor. I knew that you’d get it running.

Positive ground does not mean the frame "hot"- its just positive ground. Most 6v systems were positive ground.

My 1948 B is almost identical. But my B has a regular distributor.

The early "B's" had a Waukeshaw engine, with a different firing order than the later ones.

The thing you call a box is called a MAG needle yes the toggle switch kills the power to the Magneto it does not have a distributor the kill the power to the Magneto you ground it out that's why the other wire off the switch was on the metal box

We had a WC with the same set up . Battery never seemed to last long don't know why .Maybe it was put in wrong .So we cranked it all the time and it started easy . But you had to have the battery cable grounded to the frame

On the engine kill wire from the magneto, easiest way to envision how it works, is first, forget about the battery, just pretend there is no battery / external power involved. Second, think of how the breaker points inside the magneto close to "ground" to collapse the magnetic field in the primary wires generated by the permanent magnet in the magneto. This collapse is what then generates the high voltage on the secondary. To kill the engine, your toggle switch is in parallel with the breaker points, with the switch closed, no spark, no run. Same concept on a pull start lawn mower, when you push the throttle to the stop / off position, the throttle lever on the side of the engine shorts out the magneto to kill the engine.

One last thing, the toggle switch is backwards to normal ignition switch thinking, with a mag ignition, switch open to run, closed to stop.

Excellent explanation, I did eventually grasp the basic concept but this really ties my fractured understanding together. I appreciate the knowledge you share, big help!

I do have a question, on the left side of your tractor under the fuel tank is a round hinged cover. What does that give you access to? My WD45 is vastly different in that area.

Good question, currently I keep a battery tender hidden away in there. Other wise as far as I know, the space is just an enclosed storage box. Perhaps it was originally intended for tools, and couple pins? I'll look into it further next time I take her for a spin!
