V-22 Osprey: The Incredible Aircraft That Can Do It All!

The V-22 Osprey is an American multi-mission, tiltrotor military aircraft with both vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities. It is designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft.
The Pentagon concept with future Osprey variants is to build upon the lift, speed, and versatility of the aircraft’s tiltrotor technology and give the platform more performance characteristics in the future. While few specifics were yet available, this will likely include improved sensors, mapping, and digital connectivity, even greater speed and hover ability, and better cargo and payload capacity. Other upgrades will probably see next-generation avionics and new survivability systems such as defenses against incoming missiles and small arms fire.

To all the Haters: Since becoming operational in 2007, the V-22 has had eight crashes resulting in 16 fatalities and several minor incidents. By comparison the beloved F16 has had 60 crashes resulting in total destruction of aircraft, and the F18 hornet has had 49 accidents in the same timeframe. The V22 has had the lowest incident rate for all Marine aircraft. Its deployment in Afghanistan was extended past the combat drawdown of 2013 because it could get wounded to hospitals faster than anything else. Hate all you want but it is going to be around for a long time.

When I was in the air force, we had only 1/3 operational ready, the rest of the 2/3 were in the maintenance shop. This is unheard of in the maintenance world. This thing is broken from the design. If F16 crashes, it is only 1 pilot flying it. The Ospray holds 2 pilots plus cargo/souls, which is why it is a big deal when this crashes than jets.

The F-16 has been in service since the seventies so 60 isn't a bad result either actually less per year than V-22 and other navy and marine assets. They have a larger incident rate in the maritime domain due to higher risk and in the case of the V-22 low altitude failure of the gears or engine even the best pilots can't hold it than.

My glory days at Sikorsky Aircraft was from the late 1980s thru the early 1990s, when I worked as an A&P Service Mech who also held a class III FAA med certification so before you ask, yes lots of flight time in MH 53 E, CH 53 E, and SM 80 1. Thar being said, I am a huge fan of the Osprey, and feel it is a brilliant design. Yes, unfortunately there have been crashes involving fatalities, but so have 53s. I've seen the white top Presidential Ospreys come by the plant, and am always in awe of the impressive sight and sound of the Osprey. This is also the future of vertical lift aircraft, as higher speeds become more of a requirement, along with distance. Good video, very informative.

Ospreys better not be stopped but continuously improved, esp enhancements to further lower costs on operation & maintenance. It's currently the only aircraft that can be modified to serve as AEWACS plane on non-CATOBAR carriers of Japan, India, UK, Australia, France... While also can serve as STOVL aircraft befitting on the first island chain where threats that runways will be destroyed IF a hot war breaks out

India is going to buy the Merlin, as are Australia. The Osprey is way to big for the Spanish, italian, Japanese, Turkish, or Australian carriers. The only other countries that could operate the osprey aer the UK, and france but it's preposterous maintenance costs mean they won't have them. The Merlin is being considered by Australia, Turkey, Japan, and Spain as their sea borne AWACS.

Working at Bell we also had the eagle eye tilt rotor. It was unmanned with a drive system derivative of the huey . Later it was suggested it be used to recover downed pilots with a lowering door in the lower fuselage. Scary but if you have no other options...

I'm a big devotee of the "K.I.S.S." (Keep It Simple Stupid) method of system design (any kind of system), sometimes you can't though. I've had the stinkeye towards the Osprey since the beginning of the program. While it's pretty much part of every government program that they end up with a flawed system and think they can "fix it in production", and they usually can. The Osprey has been fairly successful, I think there were probably better designs available (better as in "can do the same jobs as good or better for cheaper"). I was in the Army, part of the MLRS program in the 80's and again in the early 2000's. That system has evolved so much, the HIMARs is amazing. I'm not sure what the computer is for that Fire Control System (FCS). But, I think as of 2006, it was still like a x286 or x386. Didn't need a ton of compute power for all that firepower.

It's an amazing aircraft. I think it's important to understand the A/C does not have the capabilities as a helicopter landing into confined areas. So Pilots need to be more careful in those environments.

That’s another issue. The design prevents you from incorporating forward facing guns. It other words, you would either hit the props or as the case with the floor mounted gun, induce massive vibrations and/or failure.

I thought it was a gimmick until I researched it. The Navy Procurement system has made it great. It is expensive but has become the world's safest aircraft. By its nature it is faster and has more range than any helicopter. This is because a helicopter is limited by the rotar speed that is the side where the rotar iis advancing cannot exceed the speed of sound. The v22 avoids the critical problem that helicopters face by rapidly transitioning to the aircraft mode while helicopters spend a longet time in an altitude where they can't autorotate if the engine fails.

I was a structural design engineer. I worked on the Osprey in 1984 at Grumman and then in 1986 at Bell, when the project was, at that time, put on hold. It is a very complicated aircraft, in a mechanical sense. I never had a handle on the design overall, and many many hands were laid on that program over the decades. I think it is a mess and will remain a mess. Just my sense of it.

Jim Slife has an ulterior motive in issuing the grounding order for the CV-22s as the rare clutch issue has been known about since 2010 and the Marine Corps has developed and implemented procedures to deal with it should it occur. I’ll take the more reliable Chinook over the Osprey. Chinook can carry 70% more troops at about half the cost to purchase & operate. Osprey has the better range and speed.
