The people in the comments who thought we wouldn’t be 4-6 are bugging. I am very happy with this staff. They’ll hopefully still get to a bowl game this year and next year should be a better team! I don’t think Chiles is really the issue this year. To me, the problem is the offensive line.

That's about right. I think if you give Chiles a serviceable O-line, he will complete some passes for big chunks. I've been saying it since the beginning of the year, the O-line is brutal. Smith has to fix starting from the trenches outward.

@@YTSpartytwo things: 1) Aidan Chiles is getting better every game and 2) all of the teams actual problems are related to the lack of a quality offensive line which to me is a holdover issue from the previous regime that Smith hasn’t had the chance to fix. The reason I say all the problems are related to the offensive line is this: we can’t run the ball because the offensive line sucks, when we can’t run the ball, our sophomore qb has to throw it 35+ times. When he has to throw 35+ times without the opposing defense needing to play the run, he’s bound to fail just like every other quarterback. When he fails, the defense has to play 90+ snaps, when the defense plays 90+ snaps, we have injuries and a tired defense who can’t stop the opposing offense. The problem is that a bad O-Line can only be fixed over a few years. And without a good O-Line, every part of your team looks bad regardless of the quality of play from everyone else. Malik Spencer and Chuck Brantley would be playing right now if they didnt have to play 90 snaps every game imo.

@@Montythedog123 You act like the OL is something Smith can't control. He recruited the team, he coaches the OL. If they suck, that's on him. You had Lepo give up an easy sack on Chiles' vulnerable side, that's on our OL coach. Why is Lepo in that position? As for Brantley, again, who didn't see him getting injured coming? Dude is made of balsa wood. He hasn't made it to the end of any season yet. Why didn't Smith do a better job of getting portal guys, etc? Chiles is only doing better because they are limiting what he can and can't do, i.e. it's hard to screw up when you are handing the ball off. He's really not getting better, he's just not as bad.

@YTSparty there aren’t that many good O lineman in the transfer portal. He didn’t get to pick the roster he got. He has to develop the players. It’ll work out. You will see.

Paul’s takes this time are better than usual, I agree with most everything he said. I will add it’s hard to win with 5 of your top 6 DBs out for the season, and you just don’t have the athletes for an effective pass rush. Add in an O-line that cannot perform consistently, and you get what you see.

Oh well, there is always next year. I didn’t want to say that THIS YEAR before the YEAR was over. Point to be made, I expected that Spartan’s by now would have UPGRADED their offense in terms of.putting more points against opponents. This year is a let down in that regard. Actually defense is what it is. Coach Rossi has been doing a good job overall. With more recruiting defense can be step up. However, offense appeared to have enough talent, be it potential, they should be doing better this time of year. Think about it - 6 points. PLEASE KEEP our punter KIM! We need more points.

I really hate hearing excuses, excuses are for losers. If Jonathon Smith were the great, amazing coach everyone said he was, we wouldn't be this pathetic. Our recruiting would not be #60 in the country. I thought the Iowa game really impressed me, then I saw crappy UCLA do exactly the same to Iowa....in Iowa City. Nothing to date has me impressed with Jonathon Smith. He's not recruiting. He made no adjustments with the portal to account for any potentially lacking talent. Excuses now lead to excuses later. So next year when he's having a losing season, do we say "oh well, he just doesn't have the talent, it's understandable". We hired supposedly a great coach. Making excuses for him is pathetic. Great coaches don't have losing seasons and #60 recruiting classes. Smith was spotted 2 wins to start the season. To end up with 2 more wins would be firable IMHO. NO EXCUSES.

I will be very disappointed if they lose to a terrible Purdue team. I won't be surprised if they lose to Rutgers, but losing to Purdue would be dreadful. The injury bug has been brutal this season and also the last few seasons which seems like a pattern.

You have to give the new staff time to get some players. MSU needs front line help on both sides of the ball. They get pushed around by everyone. Skilled players can’t perform without help up front.
