Let's tear down the cylinder heads that came on the even-fire Lamborghini V10 that came on the Lamborghini Gallardo from 2004-2008. We review how to remove valves from the cylinder head on a dual overhead cam motor We review how to clean exhaust and intake valves of the carbon. We then clean the cylinder head of oil, carbon, and other contaminants. During the final install, we put in new valve stem seals that were leaking oil onto the piston, install the rockers, and finally the camshafts to be put back on the car.
Valve Stem Removal & Install Tool: amzn.to/3rNbYAS
Overhead Valve Spring Removal Tool: amzn.to/3OvPPk9
Wrap around Overhead Valve Spring Removal Tool: amzn.to/3k4tPPh
Valve Lapping/ Grinding Tool: amzn.to/3Mu4zOz
If you have a Ford, Ferrari, Chevy, Dodge Viper v10, LS, or big-block V8 in your car you can learn about the OHC overhead cam 4 valve per cylinder intake and exhaust variable valve timing system, symptoms of cylinder wall scoring, bad valve stem seals and dirty exhaust ports.

I wondered at first why you didn't simply have the heads chemically treated to remove all the carbon and crud. Then I saw the exhaust still bolted on. Yea, those exhausts are another problem for another day! So, 4 valves per cyl, times 10 cylinders equals 40 valves to lap in! Must have had numerous late evenings at the grinding bench 🙂 Looks good!
@TheBullRider
@TheBullRider 2 жыл бұрын
Mario, it took so damn long to get those valves cleaned and lapped. On a lot of older audis they were 5 valve per cylinder. So a v8 had 40 valves too..... I couldnt agree more about hot tanking those bad boys and calling it a day. Heck I should have paid them to take that manifold off and put it back on. It would be well worth the $$$!
@CraigDalton03
@CraigDalton03 2 жыл бұрын
I guess I missed it. Why can't the manifold be bolted off?
@TheBullRider
@TheBullRider 2 жыл бұрын
@@CraigDalton03 Craig, the fasteners were so inaccessible that I honestly couldn't find a way to remove the rusted bolts without grinding them off and putting new studs and fasteners on. Since there is no catalytic converter in the manifold, I felt it was best to keep it on and save the pain in removing it!

Great video and inspiring! Since the manifold was attached, did the gunk from the exhaust ports contaminate any cats? Or are they not present in that part of the exhaust system?
@TheBullRider
@TheBullRider 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question Dalamar, on the Pre LP there isn't a Cat in that section of the exhaust. However, the LP Gallardo from 2009-2014 has a Cat in that section of the exhaust! If they were present, it would definitely contaminate the cat and I would 1000% take it off in that instance. The LP cars have a revised manifold design that is a LOT easier to take off.

Adcampo, thats really effective for a cylinder head thats on the car like the FSI motors in the LP Gallardo and the r8 v10 and v8 but what would work best is taking it to a machine shop and having them hot tank it for 30$. But thats no fun!!!

There is far better ways to reco a head, not saying this method is bad at all, on a budget it would work wonders. I work at a engine machine shop in Australia and shops can certainly achieve far better results by thinning out the sealing surface on the valve to valve seat, allows less chance of carbon or any sort of debris sitting under a valve when closing causing compression to leak during operation. Also them heads look ridiculously similar to some of the modern 4cyl vw or Audi heads. Ah yes and then 3 grooved ‘keepers’ put some grease on a stick then put them exactly in place the first try, rotate the first one around and do the second. Good work though, good to see someone getting their hands dirty on a nice car.
@TheBullRider
@TheBullRider 2 жыл бұрын
Carroot, you are totally right. The easier and more effective method would be to just give it to machine shop, have them hot tank it, deck it, and machine the valve inserts. But where is the fun in that?!? I wanted to show you that just because this car has a Lamborghini logo, you can treat it like any other car and get an effective valve job at home. You are totally right about the heads looking like Audi heads, the ports are hand polished with clipped valves. So overall its a simple but very effective formula that has been proven to make good power across multiple platforms over the years. Have you ever seen the 5 valve per cylinder heads on older audis like the b5, c5 and d3 platforms? Crazy engineering in those!

I hope you can turn your interests into a profitable business. I know nothing about engines, but have a question. Is that carbon build up because the engine is a direct fuel injection? I can't remember well, but isn't the 458 the first Ferrari with direct fuel injection or am I totally wrong? I have a belt sander that would make quick work of that carbon build up, just not sure it wouldn't take off more than just the carbon build up.
@TheBullRider
@TheBullRider 2 жыл бұрын
Kent, always good to hear from you! And thank you, I hope so as well. The goal is to keep providing value to the community and the rest will come naturally. You know more about engines than you think you do. This motor doesn't have direct injection. It has port injection where the fuel is injected ahead of the intake valves. This typically does a very good job at cleaning the intake valves and preventing carbon build-up from the PCV system. This motor is a bit of the exception in terms of carbon build-up due to the failed valve stem seals as you can see. Very atypical buildup for a motor of this mileage. The 430 actually had direct injection in a facelifted version first! Direct injection is great but just like you noted, there are a few downsides. It's the same problem on the 2009-2014 LP Gallardo and all direct injection Audi/VW motors of that era. In the Huracan and a few others, they are now using both port injection and direct injection to further optimize the fuel dynamics entering the motor and to increase volumetric efficiency. Port injection on its own is great though, the Aventador is port injection, and I don't think anyone will argue that the 6.5L V12 in that car is a wonderful piece of engineering! And yeah lets not use a belt sander! A bench grinder with a brass wheel would work great though. Should have done that TBH!
