There are so many ways to use scraps. These 2 are great. I enjoy adding the piano key board as a border. I think it is classy. I sometimes spend the day just chain piecing with adding tape my smaller scraps but definitely will take some of my longer strips to make 5 or 6” strips.

When attaching your binding, at the beginning... Sew, ⅛ from the edge, the point part down as a single layer past where you'd normally start. Cut your thread, fold the fabric back on itself, making 2 layers again and start like you show in your video, catching that single stitched layer underneath. Leave the opening long enough to tuck in the other end. This single layer will stay tight when inserting the other end. Keeps your finish to the front tighter with least chance of pleats. Hope my explanation makes sense.

I really like how you just sew all the scrap strips together then cut out blocks. I have a lot of scraps, as we all do and I avoid them at times because making blocks seems time consuming and I get intimidated I guess. But there is all that fabric at my disposal, so I just can't seem to drop it off at a thrift store. I think I will try this method, very efficient! Thanks for the video.

I learned to sew when I was 9 on my mom's Singer featherweight like this! Same year, too! And now, I have it. 😊 But it needs a new belt. My newer Singer Simple is still working fine. Interesting how you put those strips together by similar lengths. I like to do piano key border strips and separate them by contrast sashing to make a larger top, or make rail fence blocks. Working on row quilt(s) now with blocks I started years ago. Need to get them out, and used! I may donate them to animal shelter, or crisis nursery.

Did you trim your strips to be straight an the same width for the whole length before starting to piece them together?
@sunbeamfabricart7 ай бұрын
For this quilt I did not. I just grabbed from my scrap bin and did not trim widths. Yesterday, I cut a BUNCH of 2.5" wide strips from some 'ugly' fabric and will be making a strip tube quilt from those soon. So sometimes I do use fixed width.

Love the diagonal scrappy quilt. Had to mute the video though so I missed your commentary (we can’t all tolerate the same type of music, and it was quite loud).
@sunbeamfabricart7 ай бұрын
Thank you! I totally understand! I put "jazzy" in my title when I put on a jazz soundtrack, so if you see that you'll know to mute. I'll be making more of these type of quilts! I just cut a BUNCH of 2.5" strips from 'ugly' fabric and will be making some strip tube quilts!
