V8 Maniacs: Ford Mustang 1966 V8 Sound, Flowmaster, external mic

It's me driving around my loud and mean sounding Mustang in Regensburg, Germany. It's equipped with an original 289 V8 with 4 carb and 2,5" Flowmaster exhaust. Recorded the sound with an external microphone which is placed at the rear bumper.

You can't beat the sound of an old pushrod V8 on cold start! Unrefined, but so visceral! I miss hearing the neighbor's big block Chevelle firing up on cold winter mornings and puffing those sweet musical tunes out it's duel tailpipes!

I hate to disagree, but, I disagree. Not most came with automatic transmission. Most, unless ordered, came with 3speed manual. Much cheaper than the automatic.

However for a few measly dollars more one could buy either an automatic transmission or a 4-speed manual tranny. Most cars in 1966 were ordered or equipped with the Cruise-O-Matic transmission. The second most ordered transmission was the standard 3-speed. 4-speed transmissions were the rarest transmissions ordered in 1966."

Nice Mustang and very fast the way you built it , I like the sound it reminds me of the Bullitt Mustang Steve McQueen drove in the movie if not better. I bought a 1966 Mustang coupe and want to make it similar to your car in exhaust setup and engine build up to more horse power. Edelbrock top end kit and 3:55 posi traction on my car that is what I will be doing next. I watch your video often because the video is well done interior camera and the car is great. What size piping was used on this car with the flowmasters? i gotta 1965 Ford F100 with a mustang 289 in it but is all stock besides motor swap & exhaust thinking about doing this but wanna know pipe size because different pipe size makes different tone. is it 2.5 all way through it should be though.

The exhaust is custom built and at first it stopped in front of the rear axle. Nice sound outside, but can't live with the drone inside. So we made it longer and to the back of the car. Now it's ok. It's tri-y headers with two pipes straight to the end with super 44 mufflers to keep that blurring sound. No x-pipe, nothing. Sounds perfect! Glad you like it. Cheers.

Glad you like it. It's not stock at all, it has been rebuilt. Camshaft, valves, etc are different. Headers are Tri-Y stainless steel with 2,5" outlet and super 40 mufflers. They do sound extreme, which is nice.

Cool crusing! Eine Frage: Hast du Hinten noch die Original Trommelbremsen oder umgerüstet auf Scheiben? Habe ein 65er 289 Coupe und muss jetzt wahrscheinlich Hinten wieder zurückbauen auf Trommeln weil ich sonst die Felgen nicht typisiert bekomme. Ist als Historisches Fahrzeug zugelassen, da sind die voll heikel in Österreich.

Ich habe noch die Trommelbremsen, wobei es in Deutschland bei der Vergabe des H-Kennzeichens zwar auf Originalität ankommt, aber nicht bei sicherheitsrelevanten Funktionen. Zumindest soweit ich weiß, demnach ist eine Umrüstung auf Scheiben eigentlich kein Problem. Zumindest nicht per se, vielleicht hat das eher was mit den Felgen zu tun? 🤷‍♂️

​@@SkaterK13 Nein, das Felgen typisieren ist wiederum kein Problem, es sind 16" American Racing Torque Thrust Felgen. Nur wurde mir gesagt der Prüfer wird es nicht genehmigen weil ich Hinten Scheibenbremsen hab und das nicht Original ist. Im schlimmsten Fall bau ich wieder zurück auf Trommeln, ist eh fast egal weil das Ding so oder so scheisse bremst :P

Are that RPM's not too high for a summer time? My 289 sound like that when it's cold outside, but after few minutes it's totaly different. Great car, hope that you still have it :D I just bought my first mustang month ago. Greetings from Poland by the way :)

The video wasn't made in the summer, it was the last ride before it took it's winter sleep. Of course I still have it and I love it :-) The RPM thing, it's got a more aggressive camshaft which naturally needs the engine to run on higher RPM's, caused by a longer opening timing of the valves. Therefore less vacuum in low RPM ranges.
