@Julio Cesar The daughters of ash mod (pretty sure it is that mod) for DSPTD edition has a kinda redeeming finale for Sif and Artorias. As an abyss ingulfed Artorias rises from the darkness while in the Sif boss fight and protects his dear friend. If you beat Artorias the darkness in him manifests as Manus and you will be aided by Sif and Artorias (in phantom forms though) to in some way finally put the souls of these two in absolution. I love this video, but I do wish it touched on why it still matters that Artorias' legacy being a lie is irrelevant. Like Vaati says, Artorias still kills the denizens of the Abyss to this day, despite his very soul being completely swallowed by the dark. Like the Wolf Ring says in DS1, Artorias had an unbending will of steel. His will alone is why he continues to carry out his duty even after he is fully infested. His legacy of stopping Manus may be a lie, but his legacy of duty and honor at any cost, even your own death, are not. His armor was rent, his arm was broken, he gave up his shield to defend his companion, and he ventured to the only entrance of Oolacile. This was, in my mind, not an accident. Artorias knew he was going to be consumed, he knew the Abyss would corrupt him after his defeat, but he also knew that someday, someone would be able to do what he could not. He stands at the entrance of the city, killing anything that tries to get out. Over time, as he was alone, his mind and soul were consumed by darkness, but his will cannot be shaken, and he continues his duty even as a shell of his former self. I think he knew that someday, someone who could do what he could not would come, and so he gave his life to halt the abyss at the gates of the city. If they could not defeat him while his body and mind were broken, they stood no chance against Manus. But if they could defeat him, perhaps they were the one who could carry out his ancient duty. Artorias' legacy's only lie is his defeat of Manus. He stopped the Abyss for an untold amount of time at the gates of Oolacile, even losing his soul to do what he could. If that's not a legacy worth believing in (and crying for), I don't know what is.
@seekerofalice97874 жыл бұрын
@Julio Cesar Perhaps the real theme is that the truth doesn't matter. Only the Chosen Undead knows what happened to the Abysswalker, and isn't around to correct anybody, even if they had the desire to. All anyone knows is that Artorias walked into the Abyss, and the Abyss withdrew. A hero died and the dark was pushed back. Does it matter who did it? Not really, all that matters then is what makes the better song. A nameless, faceless hero does not inspire, and has no story to tell. And so, they are forgotten, as perhaps they should be, and their deeds become the myths of heros, those who inspire others. Ultimately, that Artorias fell to the Abyss only heightens his heroism as he walked it regardless; and in his sacrifice, he did more than he ever could have done in his life, given that he inspires a legion to take up his sword. The truth doesn't really matter at the end of the day, so much as what the myth inspires. So its only natural that the lie is a better story, its meant to be.
@acehardy36294 жыл бұрын
@Julio Cesar I think it makes for a much more interesting character than, Artorias was the "good" guy and went and stopped the dark but somehow died doing it so sacrificed himself. It's an immeasurably more interesting story that he failed, chose to save his companion and lock himself in with the abyss to stop it as best he could. And regardless, if we're to believe the story of the game, and that we as the protagonist are powerful enough to defeat every lord soul, and Gwyn, then of course we're strong enough to beat artorias and are likely the best bet for defeating manus anyway.
@Aphorim4 жыл бұрын
@Julio Cesar I find your opinion very interesting, because I think you are right and wrong. Personally, I think the way we interpret the lore of DS reveals how we interpret actual myth and legend. And based on my outlook I feel Artorias's legend is a lie, far more often than not it's some nameless individual who accomplishes the impossible only for some mythic man to gain credit for the deed. It's the unsung heroes who remain the truest heroes in my belief, because the intent behind their actions is not one of glory, they know no one will remember them, that's their path. And so they are terrified of failure and death. Their undertaking is one of empathy and they serve its call. Unlike Artorias, I think his last words before the abyss takes him is indicative of arrogance, an appetite for glory, and tragically of repentance for his arrogant vainglory. He thought himself invincible, and he paid the price, the fact he held the gates while wounded and swallowed by the abyss, I think is evidence he failed more from arrogance than lack of ability.

When I look back on this game, and following all the events in order, I realized that Alvina downplays the legend for everyone else because she knows that one day, the one chosen to end it all will come. Why does she know? Cause she helped that person to rescue Sif from the dark, the one who does not belong. The measures put in place to protect the grave were to insure that no other could claim the secret of abyss walking, except the chosen undead. For they would come, knowing the truth behind it all, because they helped shape that legend. Alvina feigns ignorance when the Chosen Undead appears, pretending not to recognize them yet allowing them to proceed unchallenged where all others failed... Perhaps Sif had wanted it this way. Having long decided that no other would have the secret of his Master, except the one who liberated them both. So Sif fought and defended his Masters grave, refusing to let anyone defeat him, no matter how old and tired he became. For he waited for that one person to come....the one person he wanted to bequeath the secret of his Master too. And when they do come, they recognize this person immediately, the scent of the one they burned into their memory. Upon realizing who it is, they are happy. Because now its finally time to fulfill his duty...For Sif would not allow himself to fall to anyone else but this person. The Chosen Undead is...reluctant, unwilling to act. But Sif his tired, he wants this to end by the Chosen Undead's hand. But honorably he must fall, it is the only way it can end...Sif pleads with the Chosen Undead to put an end to his suffering. Reluctantly, the Chosen Undead complies... One more battle....an honorable duel to the death....his wait was finally over.

The way Sif's eyes look at you the first time is like he is seeing a resemblance of his master inside you. Sif is duty bound to stop you because he did not want the same disaster fall upon you. Whether you are worthy to continue his master legacy or not.

Me: "Oh, I'll be fine." (Cut scene) Sif stands ready to crush this intruder, another invader into the grave of the man that saved his life. Then...a scent. He recognizes you from so long ago. He pulls his paw back, this way feeling wrong. No. You were a fighter. You deserved better. Slowly you reach for him, showing you mean no harm: Don't you remember me? Don't you understand what I have to do? But Sif ducks his head away. You had a job to do. So did he. His bones ached from the cold, his joints creaked with tales of forgotten fights, and memories...memories so heavy it seemed that Sif should just fade, that it would be better off that way. But what would Artorias think of him then? Sif howls, a bitter sweet note that says, "My old friend...I will see you shortly. But I will show you that I deserve to be at your side," before picking up the sword that they both wielded so long ago. VaatiVidya: "Maybe in death, he can find his friend Artorias again." With a heavy heart, I went back, and killed Sif. NEW GAME PLUS! I postponed killing Sif for as long as possible, even going through the DLC beforehand (for the first time). Coming across puppy Sif made me so happy! And together, Sif, and I ventured into the Heart of Darkness, and fulfilled Artorius' mission by slaying the Heir of the Pygmy. I then had to do it...I had to kill Sif...upon venturing to the grave site, I encountered Sif, *and it broke my god damned heart*. Seeing Sif remember who I was, and then reluctantly take up the sword, clearly torn between not killing her friend, and ensuring her friend wouldn't come to the same fate as her master by protecting the Covenant at all costs... Who would have thought that a game with like 80 lines of total dialogue would have such impactful character development?

It brought a tear to my eye thinking about Slave Knight Gael believe it or not. Artorias's fight against the creatures of the abyss meant he was still in there despite his madness. As was Gael even when he became the "Red Hood," for what was left of him was a knight setting out to finish the world fit for man, the pigment. What was inspiring is that both fought with tenacity, that a slave knight and a legend across time both possessed the same bravery regardless of status. What brought a tear to my eye was their unyielding commitment. Great video VaatiVidya, as always. Cheers.

Artorias is a God, Gael is only Man. Artorias was corrupted by the abyss, Gael lived throughout the countless times the first flame was rekindled ( slave knights served as frontline fodder for Gwyn's divine army ) yet all the Gods are gone, even the first Chosen Undead served his purpose in the first Age of Fire. Gael would live longer than the Gods, fulfill more than the Gods, be responsible for gathering the materials to building a new world, but he would die as the Red Hood, only to be forgotten and acknowledged only as a murderous creature. I always imagine my character crying after Sif's death. Sif wasnt just a guardian that sought no evil: we saved her from the abyss, and she helped us fight Manus. Killing her, even fighting her, is cruel. You may not have died after the fight but this is no victory.

You know, as the Lore has been shaped and our understanding has grown over the years, it's become clearer and clearer to me that Gwyn was a massive hypocrite. He rose up against the rule of the Dragons, violently changing the status quo and ending their eternal rule of the world. He then immediately turns around and betrays a key ally, so that HIS rule, could be eternal. I mean its become clear, the Dark was not dangerous originally, the pygmy's could control it and wield it safely, just as Gwyn could control and wield the Light. Then Gwyn tried to restrain the Dark, so that his Light would remain dominant and what did he succeed in doing with that? He caused the Dark to become uncontrollable and toxic in a way it wasn't before he tried to bind it. He feared the Dark so much, that he wound up making it considerably more dangerous than it was before. I mean we now know, the Furtive Pygmy almost certainly wasn't trying to overthrow Gwyn, he and his people fought alongside Gwyn and based on how dedicated they were to Filianore, they likely sought no quarrel with the gods. Gwyn was the first of many to sacrifice themselves to keep the first flame burning and so far as I can see, that was Gwyn enacting a botched solution, to a problem HE CAUSED.
@joeearley64676 жыл бұрын
The first time playing through dark souls it seemed like Gwyn was the good guy, and he sacrificed himself for the good of the world, but in reality, he was weak and unwise, and the enemy of humanity.
@masternate29936 жыл бұрын
not a hypocrite more like a hmmmm I don't even no a word for it Gwyn just feared the return of a new age of ancients because after the age of fire was foretold an age of dark then balance would be restored a new timeless grey era the second age of ancients and to prevent that Gwyn Lord of sunlight had to become the first Lord of cinder and prolong the age of fire as long as he can witch in turn yes did corrupt the dark and make it from a age of recovery and rest to a toxic and most chilling time an age that should be avoided at all cost but I mean as we see at the end of time (not all time but just the ages of fire and dark) with uncle Gael a second grey era isn't all bad I mean a bit lonely but not bad at all sooooo no hypocrite is most def not the word for Gwyn best I can come up with that is the closest to what he really is would be coward/hero
@hoshi3146 жыл бұрын
It is the nature of those who held power for too long, for once the power was stripped then his existence became naught but ash since we all know power corrupts. Gwyn is not a hypocrite for me but an egotistic and self-serving man just like a typical bad king in fantasy stories. In DS2 there were implications that the so called "first sin" is the Gwyns's botched act of prolonging his age of fire that messed with fate's machinations and caused this whole shitshow to begin win. Fighting a fixed fate is fine and dandy and all but when the consequence gets this bad i have no qualms to call him a bad king doing a simple act of not wanting to get off the throne by all means necessary
@dylanbuford65126 жыл бұрын
"Men often create the things they dread. Men of peace create engines of war. Invaders create anvengers." I know it's sort of corny to quote this, but it's very true. Gwyn was so scared that he fucked up. Badly.
@vhalrougelarfouxe6 жыл бұрын
What an irony that I just thought of. Who's soul is darker? The souls of men that had the alleged Dark soul or the soul of God that hungers for his rule to be dominant in the world? I only wish that we can have Dark Souls 4: The Age of Men. That would be an interesting title.
