This Viewer Suggested location takes me to the location of a 1950's Vacant & Decayed former Lehigh Valley Railroad Train Station. When this was brought to my attention, I knew I needed to see it for myself, so I added it to my list and finally made time to check it out. Although the doors are wide open, it is posted and sits along an active rail line, but that doesn't mean we can't admire it from the outside. So I invite you to come along with ‪@rj78productions88‬ & myself as we take a look at this location that is part of Railroading HIstory.

Last Train 1960, THE MAPLE LEAF a overnight mail and express train. Those are express carts on the platform. The black top is the platform. The garage doors were where the package express and local mail was loaded or loaded. Railway Express was the carrier. It's Fedex or United Parcel business today. All former passenger train business! The tracks next to it. Was for the set out cars to be loaded or unloaded. The concrete post at 8:00 was I believe for a mail box! Most stations had them. Trains had Post Offices on them next to the unit. At the stop the Postman got off and pulled the box. Mail was there in hours not days like by truck today. And for 5 cents not 66! You are at time table mile post 207 from New York. The afternoon Diamond which was in your picture stopped here and had heavy loading. The night train THE MAPLE LEAF was restricted to only NY and Philly Passengers. I liked the video, saved me a trip up there to see it. Gas is not twenty cents a gallon today.

We used to visit a small depot when I was in grade school and watch the Rock Island Rocket come thru and the occasional steam train later in life Chicago North Western railroad bought out Rock Island Lines. The depot was a nice brick building but when they took over they tore it down. Never forgot that was very sad to me had a lot of childhood memories with my friends watching trains. Time marches on.

It's interesting to see a lot of these railroad buildings in your region are made from brick. Back in the 50s a lot more affordable and definitely built to last. The Lehigh Valley in its day was a respectfully decent operation. It would be cool to restore this once prominent railroad station. We in St. Louis had both brick and wooden railroad stations on the okd Frisco now BNSF and Missouri Pacific now Union Pacific. Our downtown Union Station was once one of the busiest ones especially during the troop transport during WW II. Now it's just a tourist attraction. We have an ugly Railroad/Bus station. 😔 Thanks for taking us along Jay!!!

Should have told me you were in town, I would have given you the grand tour over at the airport. Also, The line that ran behind the station wasn’t the Erie, it was the junction of the Montrose branch of the LV. That went from Tunkhannock to Montrose. The rail bed is a walking trail now on the east side of Tunkhannock, and it crosses the bottom of our property by Lake Carey. It’s pretty neat the station still exists and they didn’t destroy it building the bypass highway around town. Would be awesome to see it restored!

Cool find, thanks so much for sharing! I believe that's the location Reading & Northern ran Santa trains out of a few weeks ago. I almost went to chase that, but I had gone to RSME with RJ one of the days and it rained the other day. Maybe I'll go next year so I can check that out while I'm there. Next year Reading & Northern is bringing passenger service to Pittston. That's another half hour or so up the line, so maybe in the future they can rehab that and run regular trains out of it again? Lots of possibilities! It needs a lot of work but seems like it's still intact enough to do so.

2102 now goes from Nesquehoning to Tunkhannock usually in June. There is a run again this year. You can buy tickets at the Reading and Northern site. That is a long all day excursion from 9 AM to about 7 PM. There is a layover In Tunkhannock for a festival. I wonder who owns the ex-LV station in Tunkhannock? Was that a freight or passenger station? It’s just a block brick building. Other LV passenger stations most of which are gone were more elaborate.

Nice video but you need some assistance. Those carts are called baggage carts. There were found at every train station to up- load and un- load baggage, freight, mail and other materials that was carried by the railroad in their baggage cars. The windows have glass blocks installed. They are glass bricks which allowed light to pass through. So now you have learned 2 new things. you are welcome.

The road behind the station is the "new" US Hwy 6 bypass that was opened in the late 1990s. Most of those streets used to go right up the hill into town but they closed most of them in the late 80s when they turned the area between the railway and the river into "riverside park" after numerous floods destroyed much of what was along there. In the "old" 1950s picture you can see the old Billings Mill in the background - that was torn down in the 80s around the same time those other tracks were put to rest. One of those tracks was kept active much later than the others as it went into the Agway Supply, which was located directly underneath what is that section of Hwy 6 bypass now. The station was still relatively well maintained until around that time as well. I would say it's been 35-40 years now since they stopped using it for anything. I lived within a mile or so of here the first 22 years of my life and used to walk along the river there daily - I've been gone since the mid 90s, but still have family and property there.

Hey there JP and RJ78, that's a sweet find of a disused railroad structure, just imagine the possibilities of what that building could become if it were properly taken care of, especially if whoever got it could have rail service restored to it, a possible revenue maker for the community. Sadly, with the way the economy is, that may never happen. What is really mind boggling is, there is so much history in the region of North East Pennsylvania that most people have either not seen it or haven't looked for it, it just sits there being reclaimed by nature and destroyed by vandalism, old railroad tracks that are being made into walking trails, old railroad sidings that went into coal mines, the list is endless and everything is right there for everyone to go see yet they can't see past their noses to go and explore the great outdoors, they'd rather stick their noses in front of their cell phones, even when driving, nobody cares anymore about our regional history, of which there is plenty to get out and see

I bet that area got utterly destroyed in Hurricane Agnes. It was probably already closed by then, but I bet the rails, road, and building got undermined and weren't worth fixing. Then they came along and improved the road behind it, and raised the grade, so that the cross street was unusable. I was in Williamsport for that storm, and I remember the news showing how bad things were in Wilkesbarre, Scranton and Harrisburg every day. Thankfully, Williamsport had the dikes. The flood nearly got to the top, but the dikes held the water back. They may have even raised that grade so it would be above the average flood. According to google map, that is route 6 behind it. It is heartbreaking how much we have lost as a nation.

The service entrance cable from the electric meter does not look like it's more than say 40 years old. It's definitely not the original from the 50s. It appears to be PVC jacketed cable, which came out sometime in the mid 70s according to what I read.

The picture of the train about a minute in the video. Might be the last Black Diamond. Why? The mail and express carts are empty! Which was a major source of income for the passenger trains. Unless it was a Sunday? Most people have that off to go and take pictures of trains. Loss of the packages and mail was the end of private passenger trains across the country. The night train continued until if could be replaced by slow, expensive trucks.

half of the station was passenger use, hence the asphalt platform, the rest was freight and baggage, hence the carts and loading dock…odds are the freight was the real breadwinner there since it was built when the passenger trains were in steep decline in ridership and quality

Makes sense. Thanks for the correction.

@@JPVideos81 it stood out for the reasons you mentioned: the baggage carts, sign, and low platform…freight stations don’t need a low platform as they’d unload onto a high platform right into the building.

One thing I've seen around train stations are those rolling carts (for the movement of baggage Etc) that look like they date from the time of steam locomotives in the 19th century still in use. A Couple of them are seen at the left of the photo.
